What We Played January 13 – 19

Welcome to Press Start (What We Played)! This is a weekly segment that dives into what we here at The Game Fanatics have played during this past week. What did you game?

Enis – I had the lovely opportunity to play Borderlands 2 with Brittany, although we couldn’t remember where to go for the current quest we were doing so we just killed bugs. Haha. I sadly gave up on the Halo 4 Infinity Challenge due to the amount of boosters and cheaters there were in the tournament. I’ll have my revenge! I also got the chance to download and play Happy Wars. Entertaining needless to say. What I’m itching to continue playing though is Dragon’s Dogma. How I didn’t realize this game was so awesome, I don’t know, but I can’t wait to continuing the story line.

Darrin – Finally got around to playing Journey for the PS3 as part of the Journey: Collector’s Edition. The game itself is beautifully artistic, yet a very lonely experience… though that’s probably because I wasn’t signed into the PSN. One odd part about the collection is that the game isn’t played off the disc; it’s installed from the disc and played off your console, yet you still have to have the disc in the machine in order to play. So… it’s kind of like a backwards version of DRM.

Nick P. – I’m taking a crack at Metro 2033 in anticipation for Last Light. 2033 presents a refreshing change of pace when compared to mainstream shooters like Halo and CoD. Think of it as a first-person survival-horror game that requires the occasional quick trigger finger. Even though it’s on-rails, you don’t feel the linearity too much when you’re pausing every few steps to check your gas mask’s remaining effectiveness or to check for precious ammo. You’re constantly on-edge even when enemies aren’t present; if you think about it, how many shooters offer that?

Jeff – Had a chance to play Wii U this weekend. I checked out a pretty wide assortment of games, but my favorite is New Super Mario Bros. U. It’s the best of the New Super bunch, showing levels of creativity the plumber hasn’t seen since his heyday, back in the days when being the top platformer was no easy task.

Jen – Since my husband started his new job, we haven’t been able to play much of our Troopers in SWTOR, so instead, I’ve been playing as a Sith. Loving it, but I need to get used to playing Imperial side. It feels like a whole new game in certain aspects. Forza Horizon and Bejeweled Blitz got some attention this week, along with Rock Band 3.

Luis – I actually did the same as Nick this past week. In an effort to beat Metro 2033 before Metro Last Light, I booted the game up on my PC. I can’t really say much else that Nick didn’t say. I just can’t believe it was so under the radar. Even with its faults it’s a solid FPS. I kept the FPS genre going with some Deus Ex: Human Revolution. I beat it for the fourth or fifth time. I’m just 1 trophy away from another platinum! I also squeezed in a bit of Black Ops and Black Ops 2 multiplayer.
