Watch: Nintendo Reveals The Colorful Cast of Arms

Outside of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the Nintendo Switch’s launch lineup is looking a little bare. Sure it’s got some great games like The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ and I Am Setsuna, but most of the launch titles are looking to be either ports of games from other platforms or potentially gimmicky motion games like 1-2-Switch and Just Dance 2. Arms (not technically a launch title but pretty close) releases early Spring 2017, and straddles the line between gimmicky motion controlled game and potentially awesome original title that has a fun take on multiplayer fighting.

The trailer above shows the first character overview for Arms introducing gamers to oh so creatively named characters like Spring Man and Ribbon Girl, as well as the enjoyable looking tank, Master Mummy. While the names may not be the best, the design of the characters is enjoyable and exceedingly ‘Nintendo’ with its bright colors and cartoonish animations. It looks almost like if Splatoon had a robot fighter off-shoot with updated HD graphics.

It’s still hard to tell how much depth the game will have, but the fact that you can play the game without having to use the motion controls shows some promise that it may not be a fancily colored Wii Sports. The motion controls do look fun for a party setting as well and feedback on their responsiveness has been positive, so far so here’s to hoping Nintendo nails it.

Arms is slated to be released in the early Spring, not far from the release of the Nintendo Switch itself on March 3rd. We were recently able to get some hands-on time with the console as well and we’re more excited than ever. You can read about our impressions here.
