Ubisoft Announces Uplay Passport

Remember EA’s online pass? THQ’s online pass in Homefront? Mortal Kombat’s Kombat Pass? The PSN Pass announcement? Well now get ready to enter 25 digit codes when you pick up Ghost Recon or Assassin’s Creed this fall. Ubisoft has decided to expand it’s awkwardly placed Uplay system that you’ve seen in tiles such as Splinter Cell: Conviction and Assassins Creed 2 and now does the online pass idea. Now pessimistic whiny game forum users who this barely effects can add another thing to their “I Hate” list. Where as mothers that are tricked by Gamestop to buy a $55 used copy only to get yelled at by her spoiled child that he needs a $20 MS point card in order to play Ghost Recon with his playground buddies online.

While I do understand and support the online pass from an industry standpoint, however it’s very tedious to enter 25 digit codes into menu screens before I can play with my boy Sam Fisher. Also the fact that my other XBL profile can’t play the game online on the same console is just frustrating. I can’t even imagine soccer moms wrapping their minds around this concept. Oh well here’s a clip from the press release.

UBISOFT® ANNOUNCES UPLAY PASSPORT

Uplay Passport to Offer Access to Online Features and Exclusive Content

SAN FRANCISCO – July 15, 2011 – Today, Ubisoft revealed Uplay Passport, a new program designed to provide players with access to bonus content, exclusive offers, and online multiplayer play. Uplay Passport is an adjunct to Uplay, an in-game service that offers gamers extra value, including a bevy of rewards and community features, just for playing Ubisoft games. The Uplay Passport program will begin in the coming months and will be included in many of Ubisoft’s popular core games.

In each new copy of a Uplay Passport-enhanced game will be a one-time use registration code that, when redeemed, provides access to Uplay Passport content and features. The code can be found on the insert card inside the game box. Gamers can identify Uplay Passport-enhanced games by looking for the logo on the back of the box.

Customers who’ve acquired a pre-owned game can purchase a new Uplay Passport online for $9.99 and automatically unlock the game’s online content and features. Starting with the upcoming DRIVER® San Francisco release, games featuring the new Uplay Passport will offer gamers exclusive bonus content plus access to online features.
