Insomniac’s Spider-Man Game May Not Release In 2017

Insomniac’s Spider-Man game may not be releasing in 2017 after all.

During a recent live-stream, captured by a Reddit user, Marvel said the game was coming this year. “And there’s even more on the horizon for 2017,” said Ryan Penagos, vice president and executive editor of Marvel Digital Media. “Like Spider-Man coming to PlayStation 4 and Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite coming to Xbox One, PS4, and PC.”

It didn’t take long for developer Insomniac to get asked about the apparent reveal. In response to a twitter user, Insomniac’s official account replied that “no release timeframe has been announced.”

There are a couple different scenarios that could be playing out. The first is that Penagos simply misspoke. Perhaps he was discussing a gameplay reveal or something similar that is scheduled for later this year and didn’t clarify his statement. It’s also possible that the game is releasing this year. Insomniac and Sony may be waiting to announce a release date, possibly even as an E3 reveal.

Insomniac is most famous for their work on PlayStation exclusive franchises Ratchet and Clank and Resistance. They have also released the Xbox One exclusive Sunset Overdrive in 2014. The upcoming Spider-Man game, which is still under a working title, is the studio’s first with a licensed property.

Announced at E3 2016, Spider-Man is a PS4 exclusive title. The game will tell an original story and doesn’t have connections to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Spider-Man is already poised for a big 2017 regardless of whether the game releases. Spider-Man: Homecoming, the first film from Sony and Marvel’s movie partnership premieres on July 7, 2017. The cast features Tom Holland as Spider-Man and Robert Downey Jr. will appear as Tony Stark/Iron Man as well.
