Sony: 6.2 Million PlayStation 4’s Were Sold Over the Holidays

PlayStation 4

The holidays were a big time for everyone, but seems like it was an even bigger time for Sony and the PlayStation 4.

Sony said 6.2 million PlayStation 4 video game consoles were sold during the holidays worldwide. It also sold more than 50.4 million units of software, which includes both games and Blu-Ray movies. The PlayStation 4 exclusive Uncharted 4: A Theft’s End, one of the company’s headliners for 2016, has sold more than 8.7 million copies around the world alone. All these sales combined have given Sony a chance to secure their place as the top game console hardware in the market.

The PlayStation holiday sales information was announced during a press conference at CES 2017, the major technology show in Las Vegas, NV.

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), Sony’s game division, said it has now sold to customers, as opposed to shipped to retailers, more than 53.4 millions units worldwide as of the first of January of this year. Again, that’s over 50 million sold to costumers, not shipped to retailers.

“We are truly grateful for the tremendous support from our fans and partners, which has helped to make this holiday season one of the best in our history,” Andrew House, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, said.

“We will aim to continue the momentum this year by broadening the PS4 title portfolio, further enriching the revolutionary gaming experiences on PlayStation VR and high quality gaming experience on PlayStation 4 Pro, while also expanding network services. We will remain steadfast in making the PS4 the best place to play.”

Sony did not state how many PlayStation VR units it sold.

The PlayStation 4 system is available in 123 countries and regions worldwide.
