Sonic Mania Delayed, Sonic Forces Gameplay Revealed At SXSW

Sega announced that Sonic Mania will be delayed during a panel at SXSW.

The game was pushed back to summer 2017 after originally being slated for a spring release. Sega also showcased a new trailer for the game. The new trailer showed off the Flying Battery Zone, which first appeared in Sonic and Knuckles.

Sega also discussed the next 3D Sonic game; now officially titled Sonic Forces. The game, which is scheduled for release later this year, stars both modern and classic Sonic. According to a Gamespot report, there will be multiple paths through levels. Additionally, gameplay will change based on which version of Sonic players choose. Sega also released gameplay footage showing off modern Sonic. In the trailer, Sonic runs through a city under attack. The gameplay is reminiscent of other 3D Sonic platformers, including moves such as the homing attack.

Sonic Mania is the first 2D entry in the series since 2012’s Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II. Unlike Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Sonic Mania’s art style is based off the Sega Genesis games. It is being developed by Headcannon and PagodaWest Games with collaboration from Christian Whitehead. Whitehead is best known for his work in bringing games such as Sonic CD to mobile devices.

Sonic Forces appears to be a follow-up to 2011’s Sonic Generations. Like Generations, the game allows players to control both a classic and modern version of the iconic Hedgehog. In addition to video games, Sonic has starred in other media, including animation. Currently, Sonic Boom airs on Cartoon Network and Boomerang; however, it is not connected to either of the new games. Neither game has a firm release date beyond later in 2017. Both games will be making their way to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
