Project Scorpio: Phil Spencer Talks about Its Price

Project Scorpio

In a recent interview, Phil Spencer talks about all things Project Scorpio, touching upon the delicate topic of its price. Don’t worry, it seems this one won’t be a crazy wallet killer.

Next year will mark the arrival of the so-called Project Scorpio, Microsoft’s push at closing the gap between console generations. Everything we have heard about it looks quite alluring so far. Project Scorpio carries the weight of being the “most powerful console ever,” with 6 teraflops of graphical processing power and 8 CPU cores. It will enable 4K gaming and it will be fully compatible with top-end VR. And since this console is more of a revamped version than a generation breaker, all Xbox One games and accessories will work on it as well.

Fostered by the race between Microsoft and Sony, console lifecycles are changing quite a lot these days. Their paces have become somehow more frenetic. We have gone from Xbox One to Xbox One S and soon to Project Scorpio in four years – and this seems to be the new trend. With that comes the question of the pricing; how much are consumers willing to pay in order to stay relevant?

Project Scorpio: Searching for Balance

In a recent interview with AusGamers, Xbox Head Phil Spencer talks about this issue and sets our minds at ease. “I want Scorpio to be at a console price-point,” he confirms. “I am not trying to go and compete with a high-end rig. And because we’re building one spec, we’re able to look at the balance between all the components and make sure that it’s something we really hit that matters to consumers and gamers.”

Spencer also talks about the importance of those six teraflops of processing power and how they are balanced within the architecture of the console. “You want a platform that is balanced between memory bandwidth, GPU power,” he continues. “When we designed Scorpio we really thought about this balanced rig that could come together at a price-point.”

Until now, the most expensive console ever was the PlayStation 3, reaching $600 on launch day. We will of course need to wait and see where does the Scorpio finally fall on that list. But if we are to follow Mr. Spencer’s words, it seems the new console will move between the price ranges of recent years.
