Prepare Yourselves: Microsoft To Allow Online Play With PS4, PC

Microsoft

Winter has come, because Microsoft announced today it will allow cross-platform online play with PlayStation 4 and PC, starting with the indie hit Rocket League.

Chris Charla, Director of ID@Xbox, threw the gaming world on its side when he informed the world of Microsoft’s plan to allow Xbox Live users to play their favorite games with people around the world, regardless of which system other players use.

“We’re enabling developers to support cross-network play as well.” Charla said. “This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks – including other console and PC networks.”

If you’re assuming the “other” console is the PS4 you would be correct. That means you will finally be able to play games like Destiny and Call Of Duty with your friend who has it on PlayStation and vice versa, but there is a catch. Microsoft can only flipped the switch on their end. It will be up to the folks at Sony if they’re willing to meet Microsoft halfway in this game changing progressive play.

“We’re thrilled to confirm that Psyonix’s Rocket League will be one of the first games to take advantage of this new capability by enabling cross-network play between Xbox One and PC players.” Charla said. “With an open invitation for other networks to participate as well.”

Rocket League, which has been a success on the PS4, will be the the proving ground for what can ultimately change the online space for gaming. Though Charla discuss other important Xbox topics like MonoGame Support and Continuing Xbox Game Preview it was all eclipsed by the cross-network news.

The ball is officially in Sony’s court and what happens next will more or less be decided by them. No matter what happens this was a well time power play by Mircosoft.

“Of course, it’s up to game developers to support this feature,” Charla said, “and Xbox Live players will always have the option of choosing to play only with other Xbox Live players.”

And finally, Charles would kill me if I didn’t include this here:
