Sony’s PlayStation VR Finally Hits Shelves Today

Sony PlayStation VR

The wait is finally over; Sony PlayStation VR launches today across the United States and Canada.

The long-awaited and highly anticipated headset arrives at stores today for $400. The complete system requires a PlayStation 4 as well as a PlayStation Camera. Sony is also selling a $500 Launch Bundle that comes the VR headset, the camera, two Move controllers, and the PlayStation VR Worlds game bundle. Included with all VR units is a demo disk that contains demos for 18 different games.

PlayStation VR is by far the most accessible for the VR options currently out in the marketplace. Sony has promised that more than 50 games will be available for the device within months after launch. Included in those games will be high profile franchises like Resident Evil (a full length game) and Star Wars (a VR dedicated experience) coming in the next few months. On launch day several titles are already available on the store including Batman: Arkham VR and Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, two dedicated VR adaptations of other titles. For VR curious console gamers, the PlayStation VR offers way to try out the technology without jumping to PC gaming.

The headset aims to provide an immersive environment while still comfortably sitting on your couch, and not just with dedicated VR experiences. The PlayStation VR uses the PlayStation 4 menu as its interface, so you can play regular, non-VR games and watch movies on a large, simulated screen.  Additionally apps like Hulu are available in versions specifically designed for PlayStation VR. These specialty app versions allow for viewing of both 2D TV or 3D videos in a simulated VR living room.

Sony PlayStation VR is available now and works with any model PlayStation 4. You will need an additional PlayStation Camera if your original PS4 did not include it. Sony has warned that PlayStation VR shortages are possible however currently both the core package as well as the launch bundle are in stock at Amazon, GameStop, and Best Buy.
