The Most Played Games of 2016 on Steam Come with Some Surprises

A recent study on Steam has shown that none of of 2016’s Most-Played games came out in 2016. Can you guess which were the Top 5?

Steam is thriving with the release of a multitude of games every single month. Some of them last long in memory, some of them don’t. There are titles that, no matter the year of release, hold themselves and maintain a consistent and loyal fan base. Some others lose quickly the hype flare and end up in a sort of awkward void.

When it comes to 2016 and number of hits released, everyone can agree that it has been quite a year (check our Fanatic Top Picks if you have not already!). However, a recent study on the platform has found out that none of those 2016 games rank high enough in the list of Most-Played titles for last year. Actually, this list looks super similar to the one of 2015, signaling which top five games are holding their position like true champions.

The rank is based on the average players per hour metric. Here are the winners:

Average Players Per Hour

  1. Dota 2 / 636,607 avg. players per hour (#1 in 2015)
  2. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive / 360,600 avg. players per hour (#2 in 2015)
  3. Team Fortress 2 / 50,802 avg. players per hour (#4 in 2015)
  4. Grand Theft Auto V / 40,258 avg. players per hour (#5 in 2015)
  5. Sid Meier’s Civilization V / 37,885 avg players per hour (#9 in 2015)

Dota keeps on holding very strong in the list

Steam: Some Other Interesting Stats

Another interesting stat is the one that features the peak concurrent player count. This one greets new doers:

Peak Concurrent Players

  1. Dota 2 / 1,286,617 peak players (#1 in 2015)
  2. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive / 845,806 peak players (#2 in 2015)
  3. No Man’s Sky / 212,321 peak players (new)
  4. XCOM 2 / 132,834 peak players (new)
  5. Dark Souls III / 129,922 peak players (new)

See anything familiar? No Man’s Sky arrived strong to those peaks after official launch but retreated quickly to #42 with an average of 8,393 player per hour. And that’s not the only one sharing that fate. Dark Souls III dropped to #21 on the list (14,186 players per hour) while XCOM 2 landed even below, hitting the #44 position (7,815 players per hour). Other titles that also made a lot of noise and buzz include The Division, Total War: Warhammer, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, and Watch Dogs 2. No matter how much marketing poured down in front of our eyes, they still could not match the old classics.

Of course, these stats are only for Steam and other stats on consoles may render a different story. It will be interesting to know what 2017 may bring, whether it will be a breaking year, or if the ongoing trend will just keep its way. What do you think?
