Nintendo Switch Online Might Be Cheaper Than You Think

Nintendo Switch Online Might Be Cheaper Than You Think

A lot of people were upset with the announcement that online functionality for the Nintendo Switch wouldn’t be free.

Sure, paying for online gaming stinks, but you can at least look at a service such as Xbox Live and go “yeah, you’re getting what you pay for.” Nintendo has yet to demonstrate that they’re capable of delivering an online experience worth, say $60+ a year.

According to an interview in Nikkei, however, that experience may be cheaper than originally thought.

The upgrades will likely apply to multiplayer online gaming and the library of downloadable classic games, and carry an annual fee of 2,000 yen to 3,000 yen ($17.60 to $26.40). “With paid [services], we will be able to fully commit to customers,” said Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima.

In addition, the added functionality of a monthly download of classic games is being explored. The interview didn’t specify if they’d be similar to Games with Gold or PlayStation Plus (you own the games you download), or if they’d be month long rental.

The Nintendo Switch launches on March 3rd, so we’ll find out sooner rather than later; that’s only 30 days away!
