Music Mondays: Gorillaz Keep it Funky with “Humanz”

Gorillaz Humanz Cover

Rejoice Fanatics, Gorillaz are back with a brand new album! Humanz marks the fifth studio album by the beloved virtual band featuring artists like Vince Staples, D.R.A.M., Grace Jones, and many more talented folks.

After a seven year wait, it will come as a delight for fans to see Murdoc, 2-D, Noodle, and Russel lending their virtual appearances to another album. Humanz was first announced back in March on Instagram when the band posted a picture of the album cover and name along with a slew of videos featuring three new songs. This set the Gorillaz hype train into motion, and left fans across the world eagerly awaiting the album’s late April release date.

Humanz has something for everyone. Songs like “Strobelite” (feat. Peven Everett), “Andromeda” (feat. D.R.A.M.), and “She’s My Collar” (feat. Kali Uchis) bring forth the upbeat and funky sound that will have listeners wagging their finger and dancing in the kitchen. Songs like “Ascension” (feat. Vince Staples) and “Let Me Out” (feat. Mavis Staples & Pusha T) feature a hip-hop inspired sound for fans to enjoy. There are countless other feelings this album will invoke. It feels like the name, Humanz, was chosen because this album makes you feel alive with constant grooviness and powerful vocals.

To really squeeze the magic out of this album, fans should treat it as part of the Gorillaz experience. For your first listen, we recommend you give it a thorough listen all the way through. Why? Because there is magic in how each song perfectly transitions into the next. The fluidity that Damon uses to flow “Submission” (feat. Danny Brown & Kelela) into “Charger” (feat. Grace Jones) is so seamless that listeners may not even realize they’ve transitioned between songs. Of course, once you find those songs that really hit home with you, feel free to keep them on repeat.

Gorillaz gave us an absolute gem with Humanz. The music doesn’t stop with the album. They’re scheduled to go on tour later this year, so if you’re digging their album make sure to get tickets to see them live. Their shows are an experience themselves.
