Are you afraid of spiders? Do you scream when you see one, or do you simply run away? Spiders are not very popular creatures, but learning some facts about them might not make them so intolerable.
Spiders do some very good things. They eat millions of insects such as grasshoppers, beetles, and caterpillars, which are destructive to crops and vegetation. Since there are over 30,000 species of spiders and more than two million can live within a single acre of land, they can be effective against damaging actions of insects.
Contrary to popular belief, spiders are not insects; they are animals. A spider has eight legs; an insect has six. A spider has two body divisions; an insect has three. A spider has no antennae; an insect does.
Spiders live everywhere. They live indoors and outdoors, near water and in dry regions. They make their homes on tall plants and low shrubs, in trees and under dry leaves and fallen logs.
Most spiders are shy and try to avoid people. They will bit only when they are hurt or threatened. The bites of some spiders can be harmful, but most spider’s front jaws are not strong enough to bite through human’s skin. However the black widow spider’s bite can produce severe reactions in a person. Despite what one might think, the hairy, scary-looking tarantula, or wolf spider does not cause harm when it bites.

Spiders are famous for spinning webs. The female spider usually spins the web; male spiders also spin, but only when they are young. The female spider produces a dry silky thread and lets it float through the air until it catches on an object and sticks. She continues to release silken thread and carefully constructs a web. Before the web is completed, the spider begins to produce sticky thread and puts some in various places on the web. The web serves to catch insects and also to protect the spider’s eggs. The spider will weave a sheet to lay over her eggs and wrap her eggs within it, thereby creating a sac. Hundreds of baby spiders hatch within the sac during the winter.
The silk produced by spiders is developed in the creature’s special glands. Spider silk is not as useful to people as the silks produces by silk worms has been. However, spider silk has been used for fish nets and waterproof coverings as well as in the manufacture of certain products.
The next time you see a spider think of it as an architect, a producer and a helper to the farmer. Then you won’t scream.
