The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Details Revealed | E3 2016

The Legend of Zelda for Wii U  has an official title, and some new details. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild looks to be an expansive open world game.

“Open your eyes,” a female voice beckons as the trailer begins. Then we see footage of a massive looking world. A huge creature walks a mountain path in the far background, giving the world some depth and potential for exploration. It rains in the trailer, possibly showing off a dynamic weather system. Link is shown running, wearing a bluish garb, and he jumps off a cliff and glides down to the ground below, using a parachute type item.

Link is also shown taming a horse and climbing a tree and a mountain. He chops down a tree to make a bridge between two cliffs. He’s also shown burning down some brush, and cooking his own food. This hints that there will be some crafting elements in the game as you collect items and cook them up for sustenance. Link will also be able to manipulate the environment with fire and other items. The battle system was shown off as well. The trailer featured Link dodging an enemy’s attacks with a back flip; it looks like the game will still use the Z-targeting system introduced in Ocarina of Time.  An item that allows Link to use water to create Ice blocks was also featured, as he causes a huge chunk of ice to rise out of a lake. The trailer ends on a shot of the Master Sword in its pedestal in a dense forest.

After the trailer, Nintendo of America’s president, Reggie Fils-Aime stated that Hyrule will be teeming with life throughout. The environment will be a resource as well as Link’s enemy. He claims that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of Nintendo’s biggest efforts yet. Later on today, E3 attendees will be able to explore a big chunk of the game. Fils-Aime explained that no one will be able to explore this part of the game, further commenting on the grand scope of this game. It seems like this entry in the series will focus on the environment more than ever as Link uses trees, enemies and other items to progress through the game. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild looks to be a completely unique  entry in the series.

On a side note: when the master sword was featured near the end of the trailer, it was on a pedestal in a forest. This means that the game will take place later on in the The Legend of Zelda timeline. In Ocarina of Time, the master sword was found in The Temple of Time. As time goes on, the temple eventually decays and essentially turns into a dense forest. That’s why in A Link to the Past, the Master Sword is found in forest rather than a temple. So, it might be safe to assume that this game takes place much later on in the timeline.
