Insomniac Games Takes Us Underwater With Song Of The Deep

Song of the deep

Insomniac Games surprises their fans and reveals their next title, Song of the Deep, with an evocative trailer.

They had it pretty secret these guys. Insomniac Games, creators of the Ratchet & Clank saga, Resistance and Sunset Overdrive, have finally presented their newest game. The official announcement comes just two days after the studio held our attention with a teaser which already set the tone for the next adventure. The debut trailer shows now fragments of gameplay already, and it’s looking gorgeous.

Song of the Deep

Song of the Deep will be a 2D side-scrolling, underwater adventure in the lines of your typical Metroid or Castlevania titles. Rooted in Irish mythology, Insomniac presents us with the story of a young girl called Merryn that tries to find her father, lost in the deep sea. In order to do so, this skilled heroine cobbles together her own submarine and plunges directly into mysterious waters, ready to encounter some of the legends her father told her about.

If you are searching for thriving combat or mechanic abilities, Song of the Deep may not be the right game for you though. Insomniac Games has confirmed that the core game will revolve around exploration and puzzle-solving rather than around direct clashes and submarine fighting. Within the depths of that expansive and mysterious world, we will discover sunken cities and “diabolical puzzles”. And as we traverse the game, we will unveil the backstory of Merryn and her father in episodic cut-scenes already hinted at in the trailer.

We will also be able to upgrade our submarine with new abilities and skills. Sometimes we will get out of that very submarine with our diving gear and explore the depths ourselves, coming face to face with incredible creatures and forgotten secrets. Brian Hastings has confirmed that they “don’t want this to be just a world of beautiful background”. They definitely want Song of the Deep “to be interactive, like a children’s science museum on an alien planet”.

The game will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC and downloadable via their respective online stores. Players who like to own physical copies will be able to get it at GameStop only as the retailer is also publishing the title. The pre-ordering phase has already started. As for the launch, it will happen during summer this year.
