Get Cubed with Puzzle Multiplayer Mayhem in Death Squared

There aren’t many games nowadays that involve more than just having friends play with you. Sometimes it’s nice to have family members get together and play more than just board games. If you and the family need something to do just that, then SMG Studio has the game for you — Death Squared.

Created by SMG Studio, Death Squared is a game that can be played in 2-player co-op (story mode) or up to 4-player co-op. The player(s) control explosive robots (using keyboard or controllers) to navigate through the maze to solve it. Everyone must work together to put their communication skills to the test in order to pass these various levels. As with any other puzzle game, the levels become more difficult as you all progress.

As someone who likes puzzle games, it reminded me of the game Catherine. While Catherine had an anime story line in-between solving puzzles, Death Squared instead launches the player(s) straight into the maze. You start at an aerial view of the stage and the robots. The objective is to move the squares to the color-coded designated rings on the puzzle in order to advance. It can be as easy as just moving straight to the objective at first, but eventually, you’ll need to work together.

Death Squared 02

My first hands-on experience with Death Squared was at PAX South while playing with a family of three on the PlayStation 4. As mentioned before, each player must move their colored square while trying not to knock each other off. This causes the level to restart even with the slightest mistake. Eventually, that can get frustrating, but our group had my dad as a leader to navigate where our robots should land. Our group ended up getting through all six of the demo stages.

While we had an alpha help lead us through the levels, this game is definitely something everyone can get their hands on and play. It’s not necessarily catered to hardcore gamers, so even the most casual of players can jump in. It’s a fun multiplayer game that all ages can enjoy. Do you think you, your family, and your friends have what it takes to complete all 80 stages? Then this game is just what you need to test your communication and analytical problem-solving abilities!
