Far Cry Primal Revealed As Ubisoft’s Mystery Project

Following yesterday’s big extended teaser for a secret Ubisoft project, Ubisoft has revealed Far Cry Primal, set in the Stone Age of pre-historical man.

Yesterday, we reported on a strange occurrence on the homepage of the Ubisoft website: an extended livestream that appeared to show a slow panning out of a cave painting, centered on a white-chalk man with a bow. We speculated that it was one of two options – a tease for Ubisoft’s new IP For Honor, or a new Far Cry game.

The second option has come to pass. Ubisoft has revealed the game (after a series of leaks yesterday that more or less gave up the ghost) is Far Cry Primal, with not just one but two new trailers. One is a proper cinematic reveal with the other being a behind the scenes video explaining the game’s existence.

The reveal trailer is visually stunning. Set in an ancient land primordial humans refer to as “Oros”, the game follows Takkar, a seasoned hunter and last surviving member of his tribe that was presumably wiped out in the saber-tooth tiger attack witnessed at the trailer’s end.

“Players don’t buy their weapons, they make them,” says Thomas Simon, game director of Far Cry Primal, in the behind the scenes trailer. He echoes the sentiment of the game’s tagline and general mission statement – “Rise Above Extinction.”

“Welcome to the Stone Age, a time of extreme danger and limitless adventure, when giant mammoths and sabretooth tigers ruled the Earth, and humanity is at the bottom of the food chain,” says the game’s official description. Fittingly, the game will involve a great deal of scavenging for food, materials, and clothing to survive the harsh multiple environments glimpsed in the trailers – Far Cry Primal will jump from savannah to jungle to the harsh cold of icy mountains and glaciers.

“The game world is extremely large, but it’s also incredibly dense,” says Simon. “The world is filled with things to do. There are animal systems, rival hunters,” as well as day/night cycles that determine how dangerous predators are. “Players will find themselves at the center of these colliding systems.”

Ubisoft also promises that “this is the Stone Age by Far Cry”, indicating that some of Far Cry’s typical machinations of madness and absurdity will also surface in this strange new world.

Far Cry Primal will release on February 23, 2016. Platforms are unannounced at this time.
