Fable III Headed for Games For Windows Live and…Steam?

Microsoft has always liked doing things their way with their property. While other PC game digital download services have had releases from many publishers, Microsoft games have always been conspicuously absent, instead releasing then through their own Games for Windows Live service.

This is why it came as a shock to me when I found that Lionhead Studios’ PC version of Fable III (published by Microsoft Game Studios) not only will be released on Game For Windows Live and at retail stores, but also through Valve Software’s Steam service.

The press release begins, “Choice has always played an important role in the world of ‘Fable,’ and PC fans will have even more choices than ever, without the consequence.” Hopefully this isn’t just a Fable-related “choices” stunt and and we’ll see more of Microsoft Game Studios products to appear on other digital download services.

As of Thursday April 21st, 2011, Fable III is now available for pre-order, and comes with some bonuses that depend on where you pre-order. The Games for Windows Live version will include Fable: The Lost Chapters, the expanded PC version of the first Fable that originally launch for Xbox. The Steam version will include the Rebel’s Weapon & Tattoo Pack, a collection of four exclusive weapons and five exclusive tattoo sets to customize their rebel hero.

The game will launch on May 20, 2011 for $49.99 or £34.99.
