Detroit: Become Human is All About Story Branches

Become Human

That Quantic Dream is an expert in the art of storytelling and multi-narratives is not a new thing. Their accomplishments with Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls have granted them a place of honor among those studios which cherish player’s freedom to shape the beats of their own story. And following with this trend, Detroit: Become Human could not be an exception. If anything, another culmination.

Quantic Dream’s founder David Cage has spoken about this in a recent interview with Games Radar. We already did spot the game’s high interactivity levels on the first formal presentation, back in E3 2016. But thanks to recent reveals, we are now grasping the full extent of their new titleIn the interview, David Cage compares the feats of Detroit: Become Human with those of Heavy Rain, adding some comparisons. According to him, the story in Detroit will have three times the narrative branches of its predecessor.

Now, if you have played Heavy Rain you may already know what this means. What David Cage is confirming is, basically, tons of choices and meaningful consequences. All of them spiced up with the addition of a time rewinding mechanic, which gives you the possibility of replaying each story segment from any point. While this grants players the unique ability of stop regretting a bad decision and turn the tide instead David Cage also insists in the power of playing the game in a straight line so that you get a “unique version of the story”.

Detroit: Become Human is Escaping from Binaries

If you watched the E3 demo they pulled out this year, you witnessed the struggles faced by two robots as they try to take law into their own hands. While doing so, one of them is faced with different choices: will you smash that window with a Molotov cocktail or not? Will you follow the road of thirst revenge or let rationalism get in the way? David Cage assures us that Detroit: Become Human features way more than mere binary choices. “The situation is much more complicated. It questions the player a lot about his values more than about if you prefer blue or red,” he says.

In terms of size and scale, he blows the interview with his confidence. “It’s insane, honestly. We wanted to challenge ourselves and this is spectacularly more bending.” With this pitch there is no doubt that, whatever Quantic Dream has in stock for us, they have already caught our attention. We’ll surely be covering all there is to know about their new game in the following weeks. Stay tuned!
