CES 2012: Sony Selection

Sony was in full force at this year’s CES, announcing a ton of new tech across a wide range of categories. Here’s a small selection of what was shown.

(For full product details, check out Sony’s CES fact sheet)

Xperia Ion

The Xperia Ion is the first Long Term Evolution smartphone from Sony, providing 4G capability through an exclusive US-only partnership with AT&T. The phone itself touts an impressive array of HD capabilities with two HD cameras (front & rear), a 4.6 inch HD screen, HDMI-out support and HD streaming. Inside, the Xperia Ion is packing a 1.5 GHZ dual-core processor running Android 2.3, but will eventually be upgraded to Android 4.0 during the second quarter of 2012.  The rear camera mentioned earlier will be 12MP and utilises Sony’s Exmor R technology for incredibly fast photo capture, allowing users to take pictures in just 1.5 seconds from standby.

Xperia S

The Xperia S is Sony’s latest PlayStation Certified phone, allowing users to download and experience titles from the PlayStation Store. It has a similar specs to the Ion- with the same processor, camera and HD functionality. In fact, both phones contain a 4.3 inch Reality Display that pumps out 1280 x 720 HD. However unlike the Ion, the Xperia S will actually be a global launch, hitting stores by the end of Q1 2012.

HDR-PJ760V High-Definition Projector Handycam Camcorder

Sony announced a bunch of camcorders at this year’s CES, but one of the most impressive was the PJ760V Projector Handycam which -as the name suggests- sports a built-in projector capable of putting out 100″ images. While capturing footage you’ll be able to take advantage of 1920×1080 Full HD recording and 24.1 mega-pixel still image capture. The camcorder also contains a bunch of “Prosumer” features such as manual control (iris/shutter/exposure/white balance), CinemaTone presets and 24p recording. In the audio department, the Handycam touts a 5.1 inch surround mic, an S-Master digital amplifier and Clear Phase stereo speakers for dynamic surround sound.

MHS-TS55 Bloggie Live HD Camera

The Bloggie Live is a 1080p HD camera with a 3.0″ touchscreen LCD and 12.8 mega-pixel still image capture. It also comes sports a bunch of Wifi features like live video streaming, Facebook/Youtube upload and auto sync with PlayMemories Online. The Bloggie allows for up to 3 hours of HD video capture on 8 gigabytes of internal memory and comes equipped with an LED light to for low-light shooting, plus SteadyShot image stabilization.

SS-Ar2 Speaker

The final product we’re going to look at is the SS-AR2 loudspeaker, which is a 4-unit, 3-way vented tower that packs a frequency response ranging from 42Hz to 60kHz. The outer casing is made from a unique Japanese maple that was procured from the island of Hokkaido. This tighter grain helps to produce a higher quality sound with distinctly separate tones. This unit weighs in at a hefty 84 lbs. and sports a sleek piano finish.
