In Case You Missed It – Gaming News for the Week of January 2 – 8, 2017

I just barely caught myself typing “2016” in this week’s title. It looks like 2017 will need some time to sink in! In the meantime, here are the news stories that might have slipped past you. Time for In Case You Missed It!

In Case You Forgot the Nintendo Switch Was Coming Soon…

Here’s your weekly reminder that we still don’t know much about it. This time, however, I’ve got a bit of news to share with you. According to Japanese news source Nikkei, the Nintendo Switch should come to market with a price tag of around $215. Nikkei has done a decent job in the past of figuring out what Nintendo plans to charge for their products, but it should still be noted that this is just a guess. Perhaps a better way of phrasing it is to say the Switch ought to be between $200 and $250.

In Case You Thought the MiniNES Didn’t Have Enough Games…

Prepare for hacking! Some technologically talented troublemakers have figured out how to get the NES Classic that people still have trouble getting to play even more games. If you are desperate for some of that Battletoads action, you may want to know the process to do it yourself. Fair warning: it isn’t easy.

In Case You Haven’t Heard the Word “Calibrations” in a While…

Mass Effect: Andromeda probably won’t be helping with that. There’s also another phrase you won’t be hearing in Andromeda, and it is quite the interesting one: “Season Pass.”

According to Aaryn Flynn from Bioware, Andromeda will not be seeing the ever-prevalent Season Pass tacked onto the game any time soon. This doesn’t mean that DLC won’t be coming for the project, but it does mean that Bioware is bucking one of the more nefarious trends of EA and other AAA developers. Now let’s pray that “microtransactions” also won’t be mentioned…

In Case You Missed Making History…

Try again later, because Kingdom Death: Monster 1.5‘s record-breaking Kickstarter concluded last week. The hardcore board game’s second run managed to draw in nearly 20,000 backers and $12,393,139, making it the biggest backing of a board game on the site. For the uninitiated, “Kingdom Death Monster is a massive cooperative board game about survival in a nightmare-horror world. Survivors fight for their lives against an onslaught of bizarre and fearsome creatures. They will use the fruits of these battles to build a fragile civilization in a place where humans are at the bottom of a monstrous ecology.” In other words, it’s very, very hard. It also happened to be ridiculously popular, to the point that not a single copy of the first edition remained in their warehouse! Odds are 1.5 won’t stay long either…

In Case You Missed the “Really Cool Thing” at CES…

Here’s something to chat with your friends about. Razer’s latest rainbow-glowing gamer device comes in the form of Project Valerie, a laptop with three built-in 4K monitors. That is a lot of screens for one small laptop! The computer is currently in the prototype phase, so don’t expect to get your hands on it anytime soon.

Oh, and One More Thing…

It’s happening. Time to start guessing what actor is playing Nathan Drake!

That does it for this week’s In Case You Missed It! Let me know what you thought of last week and what you’re excited for in the week to come. Until then, my friends, Stay Fanatical!
