Is Beyond Good and Evil 2 Finally on its Way?

Beyond Good & Evil 2

Ubisoft files a new trademark for Beyond Good and Evil 2 and puts an end to the latest rumors surrounding its future release. But does this mean that this sequel is really happening?

The rumors started one month ago: Nintendo was allegedly funding Beyond Good and Evil 2 and therefore making it a NX exclusive for 2017. Beyond Good and Evil 2 is one of those doomed, almost legendary, titles that have been in development since what seems an eternity (it was supposed to come out in 2008…) so this hearsay naturally brought some expectation. The fact that neither Nintendo nor Ubisoft made a clear statement about it made the situation all the juicier.

Now Ubisoft files a new trademark for the game with the European Union Intellectual Property Office and leaves us wondering about it. Is the game following the path laid down by the likes of Shenmue III and The Last Guardian? Is this sequel really happening?

The current trademark covers different class designations. From in-game software and core aspects of it, like scoreboards or multiplayer, to other outside aspects concerning toys and even clothing. This could mean that Ubisoft is clearly making a statement against the Nintendo rumors. Or it could simply be that they are securing their IP should they decide to deliver something in the future.

The latest sign of life we saw for Beyond Good and Evil 2 was back in January. It came through the words of its creator, Michel Ancel, during a Double Fine’s Youtube episode. While not disclosing anything new about the sequel, Ancel spoke in present tense when asked about it. He commented on the pressure they endure to bring out a sequel that is great and worthy of the original game. “The crazy thing is that [Beyond Good and Evil] was really not that successful and nobody talked about the game…”, he confessed. Reality is, that Beyond Good and Evil 2 has been winning adepts year after year who would like to see this really happening.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 would presumably come for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. We will need to wait and see the treatment that the studio bestows on their neglected title. So far, no new announcements have happened on their side.
