Review
Last year and this year have really turned the corner on what and how video games of our generation should look and play like. Graphics have come a long way since the next generation consoles have been released. With that said, not all games have to be mind-blowingly original. Uncharted is a series that’s a great example of how a game with no original content (by taking the best of from other) can still steal the hearts and minds of gamers. Alpha Protocol however falls into the stealth genre, a genre that was flogged to death and its remains sold to make bubblegum throughout the late ‘90s and early ‘00s. Even Sam Fisher has sneaked away from Splinter Cell’s stealthy roots in the latest itineration, to distance himself from the worn-out genre.
Everything in the way of stealth is in Alpha Protocol and Obsidian dresses it in a sleek next-gen suit of Mass Effect-style dialogue. The dialogue branches, so that it affects the relationships with the various characters in the game.

The story, characters and voice acting are all great and you’re slowly introduced to the idea of choice, and how the way you treat others will have far-reaching effects within the game. You’ll find your relationships have all kinds of combat and story option perks – and not just if you’re nice to everyone. Different characters respect different attitudes and learning about them can really change the story.
The combat system however, is a bit more dated and at times feels like a flashback of playing Syphon Filter 10 years ago. Michael Thorton (the protagonist played by the player) even looks like Syphon Filter’s Gabe Logan. Something the customisation options can’t hide, even behind a big bushy beard, which can be worn in the game. Overall though, the game play is fun and straightforward, even though the cover system is a bite from the Gears of War system and can be frustrating at the most inconvenient moments.
Some big disappointments are the distinctly outdated graphics and animation that just don’t cut it a month after gamers are being swept off their feet by Alan Wake and Red Dead Redemption. Alpha Protocol’s branching dialogue and story are worth a look but only if you’re in the mood to kick it old-school with a stealth action title.
Sega has a great idea in this original IP, no doubt about it. But if a sequel is to come to light, Sega and Obsidian have some major catching up to do with the rest of this generation’s graphics, as well as the controls.

While this game certainly will not win any awards for its visuals it does usher in a new sub-genre, the stealth RPG. I would like to see this done again but something tells me it won't happen. Good review, you apparently saw some redeeming qualities in it despite its many shortcomings. And he does look like Gabe Logan.

Thanks for the review. It is nice to hear that the game has some strengths.
alot of people can get ahold of the old style of action rpg… it's more Dues Ex then Mass Effect though it's a lot like both… you can point to jump from cover to cover but after Splinter Cell it feels a bit dated…

This conversation system looks great, too bad the game itself isn't amazing

It looks good, but to be honest .. I can see my self getting lost in a game like this …

The fact that the combat system seems dated scares me a bit. I love great graphics like RDR but when it comes down to it, gameplay is what counts the most. It only takes a few very memorable moments or surprises to elevate the status of a game. Hopefully there are a few in this game.

Nice review, and fair. This is a game I've been looking forward to for quite some time, so I still plan on playing it even if it winds up to be mediocre.

bad games should get bad reviews…this game sucks and is a flop after all the hype.

Good review. With so much hate being spouted about this game, good to read it isn't horseshit in a plastic case. I'll have to check it out.

Seems a lot like Mass Effect, and looks like it's worth a shot, even if the combat isn't perfect.

I love this game… I rented it for 2 days and beat it using the rookie and it's all I think about now… I went to play Splinter Cell and god depressed… this is my kind of game Dues Ex and Mass Effect had a baby and Splinter Cell was it's god father

It looks better than Assassin's Creed 2… I was surprised when I popped in AC2 and found the character models lacking though the animations for movements are better by a long ways… still it's jarring considering how well done the face was for the main characters in Alpha Protocol and then moving it AC2

I really want to try this but the (other) reviews tell me otherwise. Maybe I'll get lucky with this contest!

Great job on the review. I know this game has received some mixed thoughts, but I think it would be something I would enjoy, despite the flaws.

Stealth is one thing I love about this game, I'm more into sneaking rather than Rambo shoot everyone. I I would love to play this game. Short but on to the point review.

I want to have this game a fair try but it’s getting hammered in reviews. Usually that means different people have different views but this time the reviews are very similar. I hope some of the issues can be patched because there is a lonof potential here

I really have mixed feelings about this game. I want it to be good, but I think this game will have you loving it or despising it.

The game looks decent, and I think, as long as you going in looking for an RPG rather than a shooter, you'll enjoy it. Decent review though, you touched on the main points, and while looks a little short, I can't pick out anything that's missing from it.
