Comics and the Gender Gap

So recently, it was announced that actress Gal Gadot (Fast and Furious) will play Wonder Woman in the upcoming Superman VS Batman. Looks to be a solid casting, but more importantly it means we finally get an appearance of Wonder Woman on the big screen. Admittedly, it’s not a full movie, but baby steps. We’ll get there eventually. However, I feel this is an apropos moment to let you in on a little secret, in light of this news. Please note, that I reveal at no small risk, for the league of Gentlemen Comic Snobs will most likely cast me out for this, but I feel this secret need to be shared.

Avengers Arena Series Review | It's a Mad, Mad World

This week, Avengers Arena finished after eighteen issues and thirty danger filled days of Murderworld. There were new characters, fights, deaths, triumphs of the human spirit, and a whole lot of angry fans. Were their fears justified? Let’s take a look at the series as whole. NOTE: Given the nature of series, it is impossible to talk about it without going over the deaths. However, I will confine the spoilers to a single, well marked paragraph.

I will say this for the book, after a few issues it became the first comic I would read each Wednesday. Having previously been invested in these characters, I had to know if they lived or died. Similar to The Walking Dead [...]

The Fifth Beatle Review

The Fifth Beatle is the story of Brian Epstein, the manager behind The Beatles. Without him, it’s likely they would never have gotten much further than Hamburg. And yet, his is the story that gets lost most often in the mythology that has surrounded The Beatles. Luckily, we have this superb graphic novel to present the story and the man behind it.

I grew up listening to The Beatles. My dad played their songs on guitar, and Let It Be was one of the first songs I learned on piano. When I was growing up, as far as music went, there was The Beatles and then there was everything else. Naturally as I have grown up, my music tastes have changed and matured (I’m a [...]

Dust Bunny Review

Dust Bunny is a graphic novel from Brett Brooks that features an anthropomorphic rabbit detective named Dust Bunny, a matchstick named Aiden Flint and copious amounts of style and genius. I’m going to cut to the chase on this one. You need to read it. You really do.

Fanatical Five: Top Vertigo Stories

Since 1993, Vertigo Comics (an imprint of DC) has be the place to go for epic, strange and wonderful stories which are both fantastic and creative. Known for it’s more mature content, no subject matter is off limits. Below are my top ten favorites.

Transmetropolitan

The main character’s name is Spider Jerusalem, and it’s written by Warren Ellis. That should be enough. But if not, allow me to wax poetic. This cyberpunk dystopian story features iconoclastic journalist Spider in his ongoing battle against politics, corruption and general society. It is Warren Ellis doing what he does best: writing interesting characters in a world from the best of [...]

Fanatical Five | Batman Stories You Should Read

Recently, Darrin did a list of the Top 5 Superman Stories You Should Read. Here’s my (our) counterpart: The Fanatical Five Top Batman Stories To Read.  Plus one. Was really hard to narrow it down. But thanks to the help of the rest of the crew, we were able to put our favorites together. Remember, these aren’t necessarily the best, but rather our favorites.

Honorable Mention: Court of Owls

It’s epic, foreboding, and a brilliant start to the New 52 run of DC’s most iconic character. Snyder and Capullo hit it out of the park. Great new enemies (the court and their Talons), and some fantastic twists and turns. The Night of Owls was particularly [...]
