If you need to improve your game, the game controller accessory Freek by KontrolFreek could be just what you need to up the ante. Even a veteran FPS gamer may have their skills improved with this affordable controller accessory.

Design

The FPS Freek accessory is designed to attach directly on to the thumbsticks for the and the , adding to the overall height of the sticks. The attachments are lightweight and are offered in three color combos: Vipr black (gray/black), Classic White (gray/white) and Vipr Ultra (black/black).

Features

The FPS Freek is a pretty simple accessory: it simply snaps on to the pre-existing thumbsticks. Therefore there isn’t really any additional features aside from the simple physical elements of being easy to snap on and adding height. It’s especially notable however that FPS Freek is 100% tournament legal.

Functionality

Those simple physical features however make some nice improvements to Xbox 360 and PS3 controllers. Again, they are lightweight and easy to slip on. Slipping the FPS Freek attachments on works best if done at an angle: pressing the stick downwards and slipping the attachments at an angle is smooth. From there the attachments are snug and stay in place.

When using the attachments on both the 360 and the PS3 controllers I noticed an immediate difference in sensitivity, responsiveness and smoothness. What used to take at least some effort from the thumbs for aiming, movement and camera perspective took only the slightest, featherweight touch. Because of the big difference in responsiveness it did take a good 5 minutes or so to get used to but it’s such a improvement that 5 minutes is more than worth giving the attachments a shot. For moves that require clicking/pressing the thumbsticks, the height of the attachments adds some awkwardness as well that takes a bit of adjustment. Again, these slight “learning curves” are minor and worth getting through.

Perhaps the only real flaw the attachments have is that they are a bit difficult to remove. Using just my hands it felt almost as if I might rip out the attachments and the original thumbsticks, so I stopped trying to remove them that way and instead gently wedged one side of a thin pair of tweezers in between the original thumbsticks and the attachments to slip them off. However, there really isn’t any reason to remove the attachments. The only time it may come up is if you have a friend over that does not prefer the attachments on the controller. Even then I’d strongly suggest that they try playing with the FPS Freek attachments for at least 15 minutes before removing them. It’s likely that they’ll desire using the controller with attachments after all.

I found the attachments to also be very ergonomic. As someone who has worked full-time in an office setting on the computer for 40 hours a day I typically get mild pain in my hands and fingers by the end of the day. When coming home to game after work sometimes I’d have to give it up due to an increase of strain on my thumbs which only added to the fatigue in my hands. I can tell that the FPS Freek attachments would address this issue and allow me to play games even after a long day at work without issue. I can also tell that if undergoing a marathon session there definitely won’t be a need to interrupt due to thumb fatigue.

In addition to testing out the FPS Freek attachment with various FPS games, I decided to try them out with the third-person shooter, Dead Space 2. I loaded the last boss fight and found that the increase of smooth movement with the attachment proved to be very useful while avoiding enemies.

FPS Freek proved to be extremely useful for both gaming skills and the ergonomic health of my hands. I plan on outfitting all of my controllers with these attachments and they are well worth the investment. Each FPS Freek package comes complete with two attachments to outfit one controller and are sold only on KontrolFreek.com for $9.99.
