Review
One of the most overlooked things when purchasing or building a PC is the accessories. People rarely give any thought into what mouse they’ll be purchasing, let alone the surface in which they’ll be using it on. Roccat noticed this and recently made the Roccat Alumic; an aluminum core double-sided gaming mouse pad.
Roccat is known worldwide for the premium keyboards and mice, so you could imagine my enthusiasm when I heard they would be taking a shot at creating a brand new type of mouse pad. I expected a product that would be great, but still have flaws that would be ironed out in its second iteration. To my amazement, that is not the case with the Roccat Alumic.

Close-up Roccat Alumic (Packaging)
The Roccat Alumic came packaged like a brief case with a handle and circular cover surrounding it, containing specifications and features of the mouse pad. The packaging is straight forward and allows you to see exactly what you’re purchasing which I absolutely love.
Close up-Roccat Alumic
The Alumic is the first double sided mouse pad I’ve ever seen. One side of the mouse pad is extremely slick while the other side is slightly textured. Not much, but enough where you can feel the difference. Each side is meant for something completely different. The colored side of the Alumic is made for everyday computer use, while the black side is clearly constructed for maximum speed in FPS (First Person Shooters) or any game that utilizes the mouse as your cardinal directions.
While playing Minecraft I did a simple “look left and right test” as fast as I could. There was a difference between the two sides, enough of a difference to warrant me playing games on the black side of the Alumic from now on.
The gel pad that came included with the Roccat Alumic is extremely durable and flexible as you can see in the picture above. Underneath the pad is a black, non-stick surface which will make sure the pad won’t slip during intense gaming sessions.
Conclusion
Overall the Roccat Alumic is an awesome gaming mouse pad that can cater to everyone and their needs. The fact that the Alumic comes with a quality gel pad and has a large surface area is a win in my opinion, but it’s a con for some. For many users who don’t use the traditional computer desk or do, the Alumic may not fit on your desk without covering it partially underneath the keyboard, which is what I’m currently doing.
This does not by any means devalue or take away from the Alumic’s shear awesomeness, it’s just a precautionary measure that I think you guys should know about. The Roccat Alumic is an outstanding product, and for 2012 it will be our first gaming mouse pad to receive The Game Fanatics’ Top Product Award. It is without a doubt the best mouse pad I have ever owned, seen, or even used.
