PlayStation Plus Fees are Increasing Next Month

PlayStation Plus

Sony has just announced a price jump for the PlayStation Plus membership. This is the first price increase for this service since 2010 and will be effective on September 22.

Sony has decided to increase the subscription price for the PlayStation Plus service in United States and Canada. The announcement comes through the back door (with an edit applied to a late-July post) but it’s pretty real and will be effective from September 22 onward.

This means that the annual subscription will jump to $59.99 USD/ $69.99 CAD while the 3-month service gets a final price of $24.99 USD/$29.99 CAD. The monthly plan only changes for Canadian players, who will get it for $11.99 CAD. Sony is not planning to touch the monthly subscriptions in the U.S, currently on $9.99 USD. If you are a current member, then the new prices will take effect if your membership renews on or after September 22. If you choose not continue with your subscription, then you better cancel it by turning off auto-renewal in your account settings before the deadline hits.

Say goodbye to that golden price!

First Rise of PlayStation Plus Price Since 2010

The blog post, or edit within the blog post specifically, explains that this price increase is reflecting “the current market conditions” while enabling them to “continue providing exceptional value to our members”. Nothing will change in the list of benefits and features – only that price hike. While this move may irritate some gamers, it’s something that has been expected for a while now. Especially if you consider that this puts the PlayStation Plus service on par with the Xbox Live Gold’s subscriptions, which has been working like it is since 2010.

However, it would have been nice for Sony to make a proper announcement rather than stick such an update in a “Free Games for August 2016” post.
