Review

This weekend I saw Chronicle and I still can’t get this movie out of my head.  Director Josh Trank, writer Max Landis, along with cinematographer Matthew Jensen  do an extraordinary job of combining the harsh realities of life, being a teenager and the super natural.  This movie as trailers have eluded, protagonist/antagonist is Andrew Detmer; played by Dan Dehaan.  Andrew is a hapless youth, a direct product of our society and a brilliantly designed character.   Who through a complete sense of emotional aloneness starts to video tape his life.* This gives the audience a new feel of what can be done with a camera.  He along with his cousin Matt Garetty (played by Alex Russell) and friend Steve Montgomery (Michael B. Jordan) come together as a team only through happenstance and are introduced to a large sink hole that has an eerie presence.  Through the art of sound as heard in M. Night Shyamalan: Signs the audience is drawn into the super natural aspects of this movie. After the trio realizes that they have acquired telekinetic powers they start to test their skills through teenage shenanigans which lead to their first flight.  As Uncle Ben (Spider Man-Stan Lee) and Franklin D. Roosevelt (32nd president of the United States) say; “With great power comes great responsibility…” this movie retreats from the lackadaisical to the real world where emotions (hormones), unfair social economic situations and the aloneness of growing up run rampant.

I have been enthralled with since I was a child but as I have grown older my wallet has put a limit to what I can see in theaters and what I can’t.  So I usually only attend a movie if it follows the below criteria:

  1. The movie has to be an action, science fiction, or combination (drama/action, /science fiction etc.).
    1. Other movies do not use the theater to its optimal capacity.  It would be like getting a Hummer just for yourself…yeah it could be fun but not really needed.
  2. I have to like the trailer.
    1. Leaves me wanting more.
  3. Do I know and or like the director/writer/actor of the movies.
    1. George Lucas is coming out with another movie, I’m seeing it!

Chronicle has passed with flying (pun intended) colors.  After seeing the trailer for this movie I was hooked.  I had to know more.  With the help of Alex Billingtons Skype interview with Josh Trank I was gifted this great little short called Stabbing at Leia’s and the knowledge that some of my favorite movies (Akira and Stand By Me) were also some of the directors inspirations for this movie, this cemented my need to see Chronicle.   One of the biggest fears that I have as an avid movie watcher is getting too excited for a movie.  Everyone has experienced it, a good movie that is ruined because of over anticipation.  Chronicle lived up to the hype though; I went in wanting an epic movie about telekinesis and came out wanting to fly, contemplating the society that we live in and needing to see it again.

If you enjoy intense action based on super natural powers and thought provoking content you will love this movie.  Also if you are as impressed with Dan Dehaan performance as I am you may be excited to hear that he may be casted as Tetsuo in the Akira remake.

Other movies you may like if you like this are:  AppleseedSunshineSerenity, and Tekkon Kinkreet.

*Don’t worry about shaky camera angles, they are taken care of  fluidly.
