Review
This review is going to be extremely short. Reason being this is as close to perfect as Marvel has come yet in making the perfect comic to film translation film.
The film never comes off as a superhero film, and therein lies the genius of this thing…because it simply comes across as a great period piece action film, full of heart, soul, and everything in between, and mostly in all the right places. As a side note, the first half of this film is chock full of retro future and tomorrowland stuff, and I am a sucker for anything retrofuture/steampunk, so umm, more please.
One thing that I wish was better done about the film however was the length. It’s already fairly lengthy but I honestly wouldn’t mind having another 25 minutes to explore the awesome period set pieces they had set up in the film. I also wanted more of a payoff to his relationship with the female lead.
On the other hand, I thought the way the film ended was extremely powerful and a lead on to more adventures to come. Bravo on a rather brave and interesting ending. Great lead-in for the sure to be awesome Avengers film coming together under the guidance of Joss Whedon. For anyone wondering if Chris Evans could possibly fit the bill, yes, yes, and more yes. After seeing Chris’ take on the Cap, I don’t think I could ever think of anyone as the Cap again. Chris is C dot America. He pulls it off with aces, and there is no better adversary than our old fan favorite, Hugo Weaving to play the despicable Red Skull. What an awesome cast this film has and under the direction of Joe Johnston, this really does turn out to be one bad ass film.
Favorite film of the year? Not even close. I doubt anything will be able to take that honor away from Super 8, but this film puts up one hell of a fight and has me itching for more Marvel and right now! If you are on the fence even slightly about giving this film a chance, my vote is stop thinking and just go watch, you won’t be disappointed.
