RPG-Focused ‘Big Bad Wolf’ Studio Announced
If you’re into emotional, choice-based RPGs, hopefully Big Bad Wolf – a new French RPG-focused game development studio with an impressive genealogy – will tickle your fancy.
Boasting team members from Ubisoft, Blizzard, and Cyanide, Big Bad Wolf aims to bring dark and mature RPGs to a new height, integrating fantastic storytelling with deep choice-based gameplay. A tall order to be sure, but it’s hard not to be hopeful for the new studio, considering that some of the development staff also worked on Cyanide Studios‘ Game of Thrones. While the game did prove divisive, as it valued story and dialogue over action (not unlike the novel/television series it is based upon), the narrative was widely praised. If Big Bad Wolf can bring the graphics, gameplay, and voice-acting up to the same level of quality we saw from the story of Game of Thrones, the gaming community could be in for an exceptional RPG experience.
Other games that members of Big Bad Wolf‘s development team have worked on include Of Orcs and Men, Styx: Master of Shadows, and a little game you may have heard of called World of Warcraft. Considering some of the games under the development team’s collective belts, it’s no wonder they decided to focus on RPGs.
Their mission statement is quite clearly stated on their site, with their two “main thrusts” in game development being emotions and choice.
Firstly, EMOTIONS :
They lie at the heart of our development goal. They represent the very reason that motivates a player to invest many hours in playing a game. Be they FEAR, ANXIETY, STRESS, EXCITEMENT, SURPRISE, JOY, they are the lifeblood of a great game.
The second of our thrusts is the CHOICE available to a player.
Many have already worked on the sentiment of choice, but not on choice itself. And what perilous work it is, this question of what choices to offer the player, realistically, in the standardized and constrained world that is a video game.
The studio is currently hard at work on a new IP, featuring a story that is “Inward-looking, dark, mature, and set behind closed doors.” Telltale Games has found massive success with their own choice-based, story-centric video games, such as their renditions of The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us, and appear to be off to a good start with Tales from the Borderlands and Game of Thrones, and Big Bad Wolf seems to have similar goals in mind.
Considering Big Bad Wolf will be focusing on RPGs, meant to firmly immerse the player in a role, the gaming community could be in for some excellent story-telling. We wish the best of luck to Big Bad Wolf as they work on their first project and hope to hear from them soon.Powered by Sidelines
