Shadow of the Eternals Stirs Again?

Shadow of the Eternals is the spiritual successor to the Nintendo GameCube classic Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, and it seems that it has come back to life after a failure to launch. Silicon Knights founder Denis Dyack’s latest company, Quantum Entanglement, had posted a countdown on their website until the big reveal of the game’s official home page. The trailer was also uploaded to Youtube by IGN.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem was a critically acclaimed title with an extremely vocal following, and a revolutionary “Sanity Meter” that would produce some of the greatest head trips in gaming history. You would think it’d be easy to get a sequel green lit. You would be wrong.

Shadow of the Eternals
Fans eagerly awaiting an Eternal Darkness followup.

Law suits, failed Kickstarters, and even a child pornography controversy have all reared their ugly heads in the wake of wherever Silicon Knights or their members have gone, repeatedly killing any momentum Shadow of the Eternals has tried to build. There’s also claims that the development of Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem was so sloppy that Nintendo had to step in and fix it before it was presentable. Pat from Two Best Friends Play even had a bit of a spat with Denis Dyack and crew calling them “unreliable at best and outright crooks at worst.” Ouch.

Shadow of the Eternals
Erzsébet? I could swear I’ve heard that name before.

Already, Shadow of the Eternals‘ latest stirring seems to be having issues. The countdown to the game’s official homepage reveal has already gone down.

Whatever the case, a good concept is a good concept, and if Shadow of the Eternals is anything like Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, then it could still be an amazing game. Provided the game is finally going to see the light of day, though, there’s a few things to consider. Nintendo owns the rights to Eternal Darkness and the patent for the most standout element of the game, the “Sanity Meter.” Also, many also believe Nintendo‘s assistance was necessary for Silicon Knights to create a quality product, and looking at their track record since going multiplatform, there may be something there.

Shadow of the Eternals
Speaking of familiar…

We don’t know what platforms the latest iteration still plans to release on or even if it will be exclusive or multiplatform at this point. We do know that an interesting nine minute game play capture featuring Wii U button prompts and the CryEngine was uploaded to Quantum Entanglement‘s site a week ago, but that could easily change seeing as the team behind Silicon Knights was able to push a PSX era game back long enough that it became an Xbox 360 title.

We can’t say much for sure, but Shadow of the Eternals appears to be stirring once again. Fans should keep a hopeful, but extremely wary, eye on this latest development.
