Multiplayer Sneaks Into New Metal Gear Solid V Video

At E3 this year, footage of the highly anticipated Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was shown.  The video provided an early look at Big Boss’ attempt to infiltrate an enemy base and destroy a helicopter.

Although this video was amazing, it certainly left many wanting more information.

Luckily, if you are a fan, or simply seeking info on the title, a Gamescom video that appeared on IGN showcased further footage that continues the E3 2014 mission from earlier this year.  The video begins with Big Boss and Ocelot on horseback, riding through the desert discussing a mission that is being handed down to Boss.  Although the first four minutes of the video is a cutscene, fear not impatient individuals, because you can now skip through cutscenes you do not want to watch.

As the video progresses, Big Boss is now fully playable and he rides his way through a desert. As he moves roadside, he spots men in a truck making their way towards him.  After Boss hilariously makes his horse poop on command (yes you read that right), the truck and men are incapacitated as they run over the horse manure. After using the Fulton Delivery System to transport his unconscious enemies to Mother Base, Boss finds himself at the outskirts of a compound.

Also in the Metal Gear Solid video, Boss speeds up time using his cigar, is seen making new uses out of the customary cardboard box, and enemy AI show the ability to alter their tactics to better retaliate against Big Boss.

However, it isn’t until the 17-minute mark of the video that things become a little more interesting. Boss appears to be at Mother Base, but there are a few differences that show all is not right.  The commentator let’s you know that Boss is now at a user controlled base, essentially telling you that Metal Gear Online is back and quite different than what players are used to.  The commentator claims “in order to protect your resources [from other online players,] you will need to gather staff, assign security patrols, develop security systems, and invest in developing new platforms.” This means that, as of right now, the multiplayer mode is all about stealing resources from each other.

For those unfamiliar with Metal Gear Online (MGO), it was an online competitive multiplayer mode that was first introduced to the Metal Gear Solid series in the third entry: Snake Eater.  Although it appeared in Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, it didn’t become a large component of the series until Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Originally only slated as a three year component to Guns of the Patriots, Metal Gear Online was extended an extra year do to the popularity of the service.  However, on June 12th 2012, Metal Gear Online was officially shut down.
