Update: Did Sony Just Tease The PlayStation 4?

Today, January 31st, 2013 Sony simultaneously Tweeted, blogged, and Facebook’d a message to its followers about a meeting involving “The Future of PlayStation“. The “meeting” is scheduled on February 20th 2013 at 6PM EST. A teaser video was also released with the message revealing very little but causing excitement that this may be the reveal for the PlayStation 4. All we can do is wait for February 20th to see what Sony has up its sleeve.

UPDATE February 1, 2013:

Adding even more excitement to Sony’s teaser yesterday, PlayStation 4 launch times, controller and system specs have been detailed. The PlayStation 4 is said to be more powerful than the upcoming Xbox and will launch with a new controller scheme and possibly launch by the end of 2013 in Japan and early 2014 in the North America.

With Sony set to reveal something “big” February 20th, the industry is assuming it is the next PlayStation, details on a new non-DualShock controller and system tech specs have recently been confirmed. Taking some ideas from their PlayStation Vita rear touchpad, the new PlayStation controller will be the same size as the current DualShock but will consist of a touchpad where you would normally find the Start, Select, and PS buttons. There is also word on a new and improved iteration of the PlayStation Eye which will be compatible with the PlayStation Move controller. Move will be available at launch but there is not any word on a bundle with the hardware as of now.

Developers currently working with PS4 development hardware have already praised the new technology. The PS4‘s hardware is said to be more PC-like than the PS3 allowing developers to have more opportunities in their development process. Sony‘s GDDR5 is capable of moving data at 176 gigs per second which would improve the systems performance, something the PS3 lacked. Sony has also told developers that the final RAM count for the PS4 will be pushing to match Microsoft‘s 8GB. Both next-gen systems are going to contain an eight-core AMD CPU clocked at 1.6GHz in which Microsoft is opting for a D3D11 .x GPU from an unknown source. Sony will be looking to utilize an AMD R10XX called, “Liverpool’ system-on-chip. Its safe to assume this all means beast like performance and especially for PS4, and the developers a powerful system that is easy to work with.

Sony is looking to launch the PlayStation 4 at the end of 2013 in Japan and early 2014 in North America. Sony is expecting to release some big-budget first party releases like a PS4 Uncharted sequel to demo the systems superiority. Hopefully all will be revealed and confirmed this month on February 20th at 6PM EST as Sony will announce “The Future of PlayStation”.
