Premature Star Wars 1313 Release Announcement Keeps Details Underground

Star Wars fans were in flight this morning with excitement over the news that Star Wars 1313, the newest game from LucasArts, was to be released this year for the PlayStation 3. Thanks to a flub on PlayStation Germany’s Facebook page, however, that new hope met the ground like a jet pack fresh out of fuel.

Announced last June by the developer and publisher of previous Star Wars games Kinect Star Wars, LEGO Star Wars, and SWTOR, the latest title created much anticipation at E3 2012 as the first game to be created in-house by LucasArts since The Force Unleashed 2. Star Wars 1313, whose namesake is derived from planet Coruscant’s subterranean Level 1313, is a third-person action game that puts the player in the boots of a bounty hunter determined to take down the minds behind the criminal underground’s sinister schemes.

Fans of the game’s page on Facebook (among whom, I must note, have the occupations endearingly proclaimed on their profiles as “Hogwarts School wizard” and “soldier of the Grand Army”) have plastered pleas on its Wall for more info, which is where Star Wars 1313’s official website prompts its visitors to follow. Besides a gameplay trailer, concept art, and a few screenshots, no other details or news is provided therein. The representative from LucasArts who intercepted the rumor didn’t offer any facts to negate it, other than that it was indeed false, quoting, “Unfortunately we do not have any announcements to make at this time. At the same time, it is safe to say that this report is not accurate.”

A similar mishap involving misinformation also occurred a couple weeks ago, when a Facebook page for a different forthcoming title posted a highly-anticipated gameplay trailer that ended up being fan-made. Although its reception was generally underwhelming, the hype and resulting disappointment may have deadened the true excitement that would have otherwise accompanied the game’s debut. With the omnipresence of social media in our daily lives, we can only hope gamers will be more selective in determining the most reliable news sources.

That said, keep it tuned to us here at The Game Fanatics for more information about Star Wars 1313 and all of your favorites as we continue to keep  you informed.
