Crysis 3 Cinematic Series Helmed by Book of Eli Director

Crytek seems to be following in the steps of other companies, like Bungie and their recent Halo 4 cinematic series, and creating one of their own for their flagship Crysis 3 called The 7 Wonders of Crysis 3.

Albert Hughes, director and writer of such films as Menace II Society, From Hell, and Book of Eli, is helping create the series.

Unlike Bungie’s Forward Unto Dawn series, The 7 Wonders of Crysis 3 will be created using the same engine Crysis 3 uses.  Hughes has been “intimately involved”  with the Crytek development team from the beginning, helping to write scripts and craft storyboards, getting each shot just right for each of the, presumably, seven episodes of the series.  Says Hughes about the opportunity, “When EA and Crytek approached me about being involved in creating The 7 Wonders of Crysis 3 video series, I liked the idea of creating emotional stories using only computer generated images.”

Hughes goes on to talk about how compelling “challenge of producing something intensely human without ever seeing a human on screen” was to him.  Cevat Yerli, CEO of Crytek, reminds us that there is another reason for the series.  “The goal with The 7 Wonders of Crysis 3 video series is to reveal the incredible world we have been building for Crysis 3 and to let CryENGINE take center stage to highlight the power of our state-of-the-art game engine.”  Cevat says that this series will show the “leaps and bounds” Crysis 3 is making over other companies.

The first episode of The 7 Wonders of Crysis 3 debuts 12/12/12.

What do you think?  Is the mixture of character story and tech demo a bad idea?  Will Crytek and Hughes be able to hit one out of the park like Bungie did with Forward Unto Dawn?  Let us know in the comments and be sure to check out the video!
