Steam Sells More Than Just Games!

, creators of… No, you all know who is. You can’t not know who Valve is, and if you don’t, I’m not going to tell you. However, today Valve announced the first set of titles that are heading to . That is, titles that aren’t , and that’s a pretty big deal.

The Software titles coming to Steam range from creativity to productivity. Many of the launch titles will take advantage of popular Steamworks features, such as easy installation, automatic updating, and the ability to save your work to your personal Steam Cloud space so your files may travel with you.

That is basically everything you could want from an online software store.

And this isn’t just a one time thing. More Software titles will be added in an ongoing fashion following the September 5th launch, and developers will be welcome to submit Software titles via Steam Greenlight.
“The 40 million frequenting Steam are interested in more than playing games,” said Mark Richardson at Valve. “They have told us they would like to have more of their software on Steam, so this expansion is in response to those customer requests.”
I am currently in the process of watching my IMac slowly fail due to a faulty screen that they installed into the mid-late 2006 models. So I am selling it for parts and my Xbox in order to buy a new laptop to last me for a couple more years. I was wondering whether I should just stick with a cheaper, $500 laptop to save some money for a new one in 2-3 years when I go off to college or invest between 700 and 1000 on a nicer model which will last me mid way through college. I don’t do a ton on my computer currently, just some light gaming such as TF2, and just misc games I buy on steam because my computer can’t handle higher requisite games, then typing up papers and youtube, etc. If I do buy a laptop I would like to be able to do more than I can now but I don’t need constant 60FPS on Battlefield or anything, the most intensive I want to do is the Dayz mod for Arma 2.

The Lenovo Ideapad z575 with the dedicated graphics is what I currently looked at with a $100 120GB SSD I’d install. I”m open to any suggestions from people about what I should buy but I don’t want to spend more than $800 and I need it to be reliable and to maintain it’s speed throughout the years if I invest that much.

3. I just recently got more into computers, and i want to experience games through it. Im already selling my PS3 on Ebay but idk if i should just cancel it.

Here are my Pros about switching:
Better Graphics (planning to get a high end Graphics Card)
The old parts im switching can be used for a new computer to sale/give/upgrade someone else’s.
The controls on PC are probably more responsive (from what ive read)
When a new system comes out I don’t have to sell the old one at a way lower price than it is right now, on PC i can just upgrade one part.

Cons:
It HAS to be running from Steam (when my internet goes out unsuspectingly, i have no access to play my games anymore because im required to have internet to get on!)
Not really able to take it from place to place at home whenever I want to show a Blu Ray movie or have other people play (but that occasion is rare).
Renting games doesn’t work for PC, i must buy the titles.

if you have any more pros or cons to it, please add, or any solutions from the idea, let me know.

I’m running Windows 7, and a buddy of mine gave me his disc of skyrim The elder scrolls V, and I go to install it and set up my steam acct, and than the product key screen pops up, so I type in that and when I click ok, it says the product code as already been activated by another existing steam account. My buddy says it can be installed on multiple computers, he purchased the game, and it’s not like he is selling it to me, so I would think there would be a way, and I need more information than just the used product key?

8. Why is it so hard to make a mac version for games? Why can’t they just build that feature into the engine like the Unity 3D engine? And why do they feel like they have to charge way more for games on mac than on pc? Like Modern Warfare is $50 in the appstore. Whats up with that? And why doesn’t steam sell Modern Warfare on mac?

9. I got the above game today, hoping to be able to just pop the disc in, install the game and run it. A 2-disc DVD ROM.
But it installed a client called Steam, which wants users to download the 15.4 gigabyte game instead. Why isn’t the actual game anywhere on this 2-disc set?
What is the point of selling what appears to be a full boxed game which has nothing more than a client with a link to one huge online download?

I ask these questions here because the company (Valve Corporation) takes so long answering their so-called support tickets.

I’m looking to buy a decent laptop for university, and selling my PC to pay for it.

Current specs are:
Intel Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
XFX NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260
8192mb RAM
500GB hard drive

I’m looking to spend about £400 – £500, ($600 – $750).
I’m worried about it being slow, I take it for granted that I can run msn messenger, 4 instances of MS word, winamp, firefox with 100 tabs open, flock, excel, steam and internet download manager at the same time.

Would be irritating if it slowed down a hell of a lot when I open too many tabs, or run more than a couple of programs (Last time I had a laptop was about 2006, and this was a huge problem back then – especially when they started putting vista on them.)

Would I be able to get a speedy laptop for this price?
I’m not looking for some pro gaming laptop, just something that I’ll be able to multitask quite a bit on, and open hundreds of tabs in firefox without it dying.
They put 7 on them these days don’t they?
(I currently have 7 ultimate 64 bit on my desktop)
Is this a bad idea?
Would I be better off changing to XP on a laptop?
I don’t game by the way – so graphics card isn’t that important. I would use it mainly for work, entertainment and socialising. Just multi-tasking I need.

11. So, I recently bought my friends custom built gaming pc. He went into the airforce and has since then built a new one, he took several parts, which would have been fine except now i’m having troubles.

He took the harddrive, left everything else. I had to put it back together basically because for some reason he took it apart. I don’t know, So the problem is basically this.

It turns on, monitor works while plugged into the motherboard so I don’t think it’s really a problem with the motherboard or monitor. I can use the internet and it runs fine, it recognizes the RAM, so I know it’s not the RAM, the motherboard or the monitor. When i hook the monitor into the video card and turn on the pc it just says no signal and doesn’t turn the monitor on.

It has a Radeon 5850, and I thought I downloaded the right driver software, but every time I look it still says it’s a 4250 graphics card (which i think is the internal graphics card). I uninstalled the 4250 a few times and every time it re-installs. I’ve tried getting the drivers from the AMD website, through steam, and even windows downloaded 4250. Like it’s not even reading the 5850 graphics card. The fan spins so I know i’ve plugged it in correctly, I have un-seated and re-seated it a few times each time not being successful. I know and/or realize everything should work because it worked for my friend and all he did was pulled the harddrive, but that is not the case. I have spent several hours trying various things reading numerous forums, but get the same results. So, how would I know for sure if my graphics card is broke? I believe it’s less then a year old, I don’t have the box/install disc, so I doubt I could send it back, but if it’s less than a year old it should still be under warranty right? I can’t really test it in a friends pc because I don’t know anyone with a custom built pc or anyone who would know a ton about them. I know it’s the the monitor to graphics card because like I said it all worked fine for my friend. I would assume it has something to do with the graphics card. Maybe some software I can install or something, I don’t know, please help or re-direct me to somewhere that can help.

Does anyone know what my problem is and/or how to fix it? Also if you know a better place to post this question like some high tech forum that will help me please post a link!

We had been best friends for 5-6yrs, so I don’t see why he would knowingly sell me a broken graphics card. But I do realize this is how the world operates now, everyone is out for themselves. Just hoping this isn’t the case. Just hope it’s something obvious I’m overlooking. Otherwise I just payed 300$ for a graphics card that will never work.
P.S. I am by far a computer expert, I know how to do a lot, but for the most part I’m a complete noob. I had to watch a youtube vid to show me how to assembly everything. I read several forums to help me get everything going, so if you can be as detailed as possible! If you feel putting too much detail into an answer is too much work, but still have an answer then just post it, I’m sure I can figure it out if you don’t want to spend a ton of time on an answer. To me some information is better then none, so I’ll be happy with what I can get, but the more detailed the better off i’ll be.

Thanks in advance!!
Oh ya, I figured I wouldn’t need to post system specs since it all worked fine when he had it, so it’s not really a compatibility issue. It should all be compatible still.

14. There was an N64 game me and my friends use to play. The only thing I can remember is that we got to a point where our main character, dressed in white, had to compete in racing and other athletic games. I believe it was n64, but i’m not 100% sure.

16. I just got a wii and am wondering if I can get rid of some of my old PS2 games in exchange for wii games. Do they allow you to trade in PS2 games for wii games? Also, about how much money would you get per PS2 game do you think?

And if I can’t trade PS2 games for wii games, am I still allowed to give them my PS2 games for money?

17. - They are overpriced for their bad hardware, There hardware is outdated
- They claim to have newer technology, when really their hardware sucks
- They made mac os intel based just so windows machines can not run mac os. While mac os runs windows
- Extremely restricted, you know how long it took just so i could access the file on my macintosh disk,
as if they don’t want us to tamper with our own files
- they treat the user like an idiot, for an example “move to trash”, really can’t they just put delete
or “finder”, just call it computer, where did they come with all the i”S iPhoto, iPhone, iTunes, i5hit, and so on
- why do they have such i limited hardware and software setting
- its almost impossible to see what programs i have open
- cannot game unless you use steam with is stupid because i have to be online to play games
also limited games
-no developers engines like unreal engine, unity, crytek, frostbite, etc
they pre integrated software in no were near professional.
- no hdmi
only 2 usb ports
- no blu ray player
- satta ports
- have i5 processor but you can’t over clock, i mean you know whats point of buying something if you

18. My friends and I are doing a community service project to spread awareness about autism. We are planning a roving carnival, with game stations that children can take part in to learn about autism. Basically we just wanna let them understand how it’s like to be autistic, or to learn more about autism through the game. Currently the only game we can come up with is Charades. The kids range from 7 years old to 12.

Do you guys have any suggestions for games? :)

19. Ok so about 2 or 3 yrs ago I bought my husband the LEFT4DEAD game. He registered it on Steam (he had no choice) played it like twice before he decided he didn’t like it. So we sold it on ebay. The person who bought it cannot register it because it is still under our acct. Well we only used steam for just that game and we couldn’t remember our password everything we tried was wrong. Contacted steam and the kept renewing our password and I still can’t get in to cancel the acct. I have emailed them more than 50x with this issue..PLEASE HELP SOMEONE! Is there a way around this or anything?? We have to cancel the acct so that guy can play the game!
