Welcome to this week’s edition of The Comic Fanatic! This week’s I’ll be talking about Avengers VS X-Men, Age of Apocalypse, X-23, and Mass Effect Homeworlds.
First up, Avengers VS X-Men #5. You can read my full review here, but the short version is this: it’s not bad. Not great, but not bad at all either. If you’ve been along this far for the ride, there’s no reason not to continue. Just know it’s not the tastiest burger in the joint. Also, Uncanny X-Men #13 is a pretty sub-par tie-in issue. Definitely not Kieron Gillen’s best work, and a far cry from the wonder of the Breaking Point arc. We’ll see in two weeks as we hit the midpoint for Avengers VS X-Men how far it’s come, and how far it has to go.
Next up is Age of Apocalypse #4. With this issue, the series cements itself as a definite DO NOT MISS. In a contrast to the aforementioned A VS X, Age of Apocalypse is beautifully drawn, very intense, well done action, and is filled with new and exciting characters, the X-Terminated (fantastic name). The series is very dark and gritty, very reminiscent of Yost and Kyle’s X-Force. In this issue, the stakes have never been more dire for the team: Fiend lays dying in a pool of her own blood as Dark Beast and Sugarman watch. Horror Show and Prophet have been detained, Deadeye is stuck in deep cover, and Goodnight has the pleasant task of trying to awaken the Hulk from within Banner. And remember, they’re only human in a world where mutants rule supreme. The writing is spectacular, and the artwork is extremely well done. Be sure to pick up this book. Also, issue the preview for issue 5 looks awesome. Check it out:
This issue drops on July 4th Looks patriotic, Jean Grey with a ton of guns. I dig it.
Mass Effect Homeworlds #2 stars everyone’s favorite Quarian, Tali! Fans will want to read this comic, it tells the story of Tali’s pilgrimage and how she ended up in that alley where Shepard rescues her. It’s a well done book, I did really enjoy reading it, a definite improvement over issue 1. The writing is good, and so is the art, although it switches artists midway through and it is a little distracting. It tells a story that most of us wanted to hear. It was an area in Mass Effect that was told quickly, and could definitely have gone into more depth. Luckily, that is exactly what we have here, and it is well done. I am very much looking forward to next month’s issue that features Garrus.
My last pick this week is X-23: Don’t Look Back. This volume collect issues 17-21 (the end) of X-23′s solo run. It picks up where Chaos Theory left off. Sue Richards calls Laura to baby sit Franklin and Valeria for an evening. Naturally, it’s far from a simple night and includes dragons, dimensional travel, an intergalatic treasure hunter, and Hellion. We finally find out it Laura and Julian get together or not. It’s a very well done book. Liu finished the series off very strong (she has since taken over Astonishing X-Men), and Takeda’s artwork is nothing short of amazing, and Noto does a good job as well. While I am sad this run ended, this isn’t the last we’ll see of X-23, and I was glad she got a very solid run of her own at all. Not a bad job for a character that started off as an extra on X-Men: Evolution. I was a little skeptical of the series when I found out it wasn’t going to be Yost and Kyle writing their famed creation, and it had a bit of a rocky start, but ended up being really fantastic, and one of the books I keep reading and re-reading. A fine series for a great character.
That’s all for this week, now you tell me: What have you been reading? Later, True Believers.
PS: I will be at San Diego Comic Con. If you’re going, drop me a line!

THIS IS SO AWESOME!!
YOU’RE SO AWESOME!!
I romanced Ashley in Mass Effect, and stayed loyal to her in Mass Effect 3. I fell things would be weird if I broke things off with her and went with Liara, but also have doubts about replaying Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 again. What should I do?
Whens mass effect coming out and will it be good?
Hey,
I just beat the first Mass Effect, and I am planning on getting the second one. My question is this: If I start a second play-through on Mass Effect 1, will the data from my first play-through or my second play-through transfer over to Mass Effect 2?
Thanks!
Is mass effect worth it?
can you give me some pros and cons
?
In Mass Effect 1, you can “import” your finished save to start the game all over again except you still have your level, skills, equipment and money. Mass Effect 2 was similar. Can you still do the same in Mass Effect 3?
Is Bioware going to release a Mass Effect 2 with all of the extra characters, content and missions? Or at the very least, will they make availiable to extra content you need to know the story for mass effect 3? I’d love to play these, but i do not have access to xbox live.
I have played ME 1 but not 2. Was going to read some of the books but I don’t want Mass Effect 2 ruined before I play it.
I beat mass effect 1 and 2, and i’ve heard that the ending of mass effect 3 is disappointing. However, is the rest of the game disappointing? Or is the gameplay and story as good as the two previous titles, and the ending was the only bad part.
X-Men Comic books
basically as the title says, i have finished mass effect 2 with my imported mass effect 1 character. I have started a second play through on mass effect 2 by importing my mass effect 2 character into the save file. Now if i go on to play mass effect 1 again with that character i imported into mass effect 2, will it corrupt the save file in ME2? Will he also level up? will he stay as he is?
Also not counting Age of Apocalypse
Would you rather see Marvel’s Age of Apocalypse or DC’s Kingdom Come?
I’m leaning towards Kingdom Come but I would be happy with either one. I would be in comic book heaven if they made both
Music and movies are being pirated online, yet there are those who support it and those who are against it. The ps3 is going to be about $600, being the second out of three of the newest gaming systems that will have been released, and many people are starting to believe that the video game industry as a whole has reached its limit in terms of video game graphics, pricing, production value, and overall public appeal. The Da Vinci Code is a best seller that dramatizes many beliefs, and the final Harry Potter book will soon do the same. These are crucial times for all of these company platforms. Is this all a sign of new beginnings and changes for the entertainment industry, or dark times soon to come?
i forgot to add the recent ‘Save The Internet’ campaign, where protesters are urging senators to keep the internet under “social” control and not under full government control.(which in turn, would create higher prices for internet usage, blocking of certain websites, and would change the way you use the internet forever!)
In other words do you think a x-men movie accurate to a comic book any comic book will be made I.e the age of apocalypse or the REAL Phoenix saga? I mean anything so far every thing has been horribly inaccurate. What do you think?
it may have been in a different universe, cos i seen pictures of him with a huge red mark across one eye

So, the last time I read any X-men books was in, I think, 1995 when they did the Age Of Apocalypse. I’ve recently gotten back into comics thanks to the Walking Dead, and am looking to go back to reading the X-men. Is there anyway I can jump into the current series without being way over my head? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!
Ok so I’m a naturally anxious and rather parinoid person. I asked a question simmilar to this before but, oh well I’m really desperate , I’m on the verge of break down. I cant stop worrying about the whole “End of the World” stuff. I mean 2012,Next Ice Age, Apocalypse, WW3,Nuclear War,Solar Flare everything! I just cant get the whole topic off my mind!. If I tell anybody else they think I’m crazy. i need some answers please no rude responses and if you have answers please back them up with how you know thank you so much
