The Comic Fanatic: Week of 5/23: The Tick, FreakAngels, Astonishing X-Men

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Fanatic. Picked up a couple this week, so let’s talk about them before I start ranting and raving about  FreakAngels.

AstonishingXMen 50 Cover The Comic Fanatic: Week of 5/23: The Tick, FreakAngels, Astonishing X Men

#50 is now available, and chances are you have been hearing about this one for a bit. In it, Northstar proposes to his boyfriend, with the wedding to come next month. The first gay wedding in history. Pretty big event. After asking people about it, most had to say “North-who?”. But seriously folk, this is a pretty cool event. Given what’s going on in real world, is was only time before addressed it, and given the focus on the X-Men lately I think this was a pretty good way to do it. Northstar has been dating his boyfriend for a while, so simply having them take it to the next level is a good idea. What wasn’t a good idea on Northstar’s part was asking Gambit and Iceman for advice. So stay tuned next month (June 20th to be exact) for the first gay marriage in history. Although knowing and weddings, Doctor Doom or Galactus is likely to crash it. So don’t leave you superpowers at the door.

the tick 100 The Comic Fanatic: Week of 5/23: The Tick, FreakAngels, Astonishing X Men

Next, we have the 100th issue of The Tick. Now, I don’t normally read this book. I only kinda remember the cartoon from when I was a kid. However, for this exciting 100th outing, he teams up with Mark Grayson, the one, the only . And it is glorious. It’s funny, action-packed, funny, dramatic and funny. Also makes me want to read The Tick now. Fans of both The Tick and Invincible will want to pick this one up. It’s a little more expensive than most comics, but totally worth it. Trust me one this.

Freakangels Vol 6 600x928 The Comic Fanatic: Week of 5/23: The Tick, FreakAngels, Astonishing X Men

That brings us to the topic of today’s rant: FreakAngels, and why you should read it. It’s available both in print in six collected volumes, as well as on the web at www.freakangels.com. It follows 12 individuals in their early 20s who have psychic abilities, in a post-apocalyptic world. They live in the Whitechapel area of Britain, which is currently under 20 feet of water, just trying to get by and save as many people as they can. The story starts when Alice, a girl from outside Whitechapel, shows up with a shotgun and trying to kill the FreakAngels. A nice welcome to the comic, indeed.

The characters include KK, a bitter and brash genius with power who rides a flying bike, Caz, who is the group engineer and largely responsible for their continued existence, Luke, who is possibly the smartest one of the group and the most annoying, Miki, the group’s sarcastic doctor, just to name a few. All of the FreakAngels are very cool characters. They all have the basic physic abilities from the FreakAngel “package”, but they also the different specializations. Arkady is the spacey one of the group, but also the most advanced in use of their abilities. Karl and Kirk rotate as lookouts and generally ignore the rest of the group, while Connor tries to keep the peace and record their history.

The story starts off as a cool survival story, but around book 4 it (very) quickly escalates to something much more than that. Warren Ellis does a fantastic job writing, and Paul Duffield’s illustrations are beautiful. Occasionally a face looks off, but the general detail put into each panel is, if I may borrow a word, astonishing. The characters are fantastic, the story escalates quickly, and the is beautiful. And best of all, it’s free! (unless you buy the books, like I did). Go read FreakAngels. It’s really great.

That’s it for this week! Now go read FreakAngels! www.freakangels.com

Two massive brands are about to combine, what new superheroes could be created by combining Disney and Marvel heroes. 10 points to the best answer and a 3 day time limit.

We all know that Superman is the flagship character of DC Comics. But, in a one on one fight which Marvel Comics character do you think has the best chance of either beating Superman or at least battling him to a standstill?

  5. I have a few of these collected from when I was younger and I could do with some cash just now. I went into A1-Comics in Glasgow and the guy there said he didn’t buy them and didn’t know many people he would because they were published in the UK not the US.

Is there anywhere I could sell them other than Ebay and not get ripped off?

  6. Ok, I would like to find some free online scans of X-Men comics (most especially Astonishing X-Men) I now how to get torrents of them, but I’m not always on a computer that I can’t be downlaoding torrents on. Also most manga sites don’t actually have X-Men scans on them, so please don’t respond with just onemanga or mangafox. So yeah any help you can give would be nice. There used to be a pretty good site called Ultimate Spiderman but it went down… so just any help you could give would be nice.

By most powerful mutant I mean the power they are shown to be capable of or their potential. I think that Mad Jim Jaspers is the most powerful mutant in marvel. If he wasn’t defeated then his power would have been able to affect the entire omniverse. Your opinions?

  8. DC and Marvel are the “Big Two”, but what other major comic publishers are there, besides Image, Wildstorm, Milestone, Top Cow and Dark Horse?

It seems like DC and Marvel are the two most people talk of. Please let me know and please list as many as possible. Thank you.

  9. I really want to buy a definitive X-Men omnibus, but don’t know which one is better. If you pick Claremont’s could you also please tell me which issues of his (especially if they’re available as an omnibus) were the best? Thanks in advance.

  10. I’m sick of the crap the Marvel gives us Wii owners. The wii can handle better graphics, controls, and online! They give us crap, and I’m sick of it. How can I contact their video game department and complain? Will it cost anything to mail my letter? Will they even care?

  11. My car cut off while driving, so i had to start the car again and it came back on. A friend told me to put the octane and companion fluid called Marvel something into gas tank with gas, and its been fine. What id this stuff?

i thik i found it. x-men 1963? where can i read these online for free?
what kind of an answer it “comic book” !!!??? argh! i foungd this thing on ebay that has every issue but it is$35.17 including shipping and handling! i am going to have a nervous breakdown!!!
by the way, the $35.17 thing is called “40 years of X-men” if youcan find it including shipping and handling $25 or under, i love you.

  13. I just finished the first 12 issues, and I’m a bit confused about some of the revelations made about Xavier’s character, and the whole “Danger” character. So he imprisoned Danger into the Danger Room? Was Danger a living being before? And why are the X-Men so upset with him for doing this?

  14. Sorry, was trying to keep it vague. This was in the Annual #1 and didn’t affect the Astonishing X-Men; rather, all the Superheroes on Earth were rendered catatonic where they all dreamed they had saved the world. Doctor Strange was the first affected
