The Comic Fanatic: Week of 5/9 – Avengers, Mind the Gap, Avengers VS X-Men, Wolverine and the X-Men, Uncanny X-Force

Holy hole in a doughnut, ! We have a ton of comics today! My stack this week from Greg’s was the biggest in recent memory. So let’s get right into it.

First of all, make sure you check out our Avengers podcast. Me, William, Angela, Seth and Logan had a good time discussing the movie. Listen to it for the full details, but really, if you haven’t see it, please do. It is a really great movie, and it is very clearly Joss Whedon’s work. The dialogue has his signature written all over it. The characters are well done, the camera work is fantastic, the action is great, and it is rather funny. Do yourself a favor and go see it.

New this week we have Uncanny X-Force #25. This issue reminds us why Rick Remender is one of the best character writers in the business nowadays. In this issue, the strain of past events finally reach critical for Psylocke and Fantomex, leaving their status with the team unknown. however, is overjoyed to fulfill his role as scout/decoy/cannon fodder. Uncanny X-Force, unlike every other Marvel book out there, is not taking part in the VS X-Men spectacular. Having proven that he writes best when left to his own devices, Remender has free reign over Uncanny X-Force and it is consistently one of the best books each month.

Also, we have #10, which IS part of . Cyclops visits the school to enlist them in the fight, and the staff is a bit reluctant to put the kids in danger, resulting in a short fight (which Krakoa quickly stops). I love Krakoa. It definitely helps when the ground itself is a member of the team. It also shows how big of a dick Cyclops, Emma Frost and Magik can be. Seriously, it seems most of Cyclops’ crew is comprised of assholes. Perhaps the more interesting part of this book features Angel and Evan (Kid Apocalypse), two of the more troubled members of the cast. On the opposite end of the spectrum from Cyclops’ team, the cast at the school is rather interesting and dynamic.

X-Men Legacy # 266 is their mandatory tie in. Rogue and the rest of the Legacy crew face down with some of the second (and third) rate Avengers. It’s not a bad issue, but it definitely feel forced. I do miss Mike Carey’s writing. Christos Gage just doesn’t seem to have as firm of grasp on the characters, which is a shame. I love Legacy, it features some of my favorite characters (Rogue, Gambit, Rachel Grey). I finally got my issue of Avengers VS X-Men VERSUS. Skippable, but the next issue should be fun, as it features Gambit VS Captain America. As much I love Captain A, I hope Gambit kicks his ass. Spider-man VS Colossus could be funny.

Mind the Gap debuted recently, and I loved this first issue. It’s the great start to what I hope turns out to be a fascinating mystery story. #91 is also now available, and continues the trend of Invincible awesomeness. Seriously, if you’re not reading Invincible, WHY NOT? Seriously, it’s one of the best comics you’ll read. Trust me. Fatale #5 might be the best one of the series yet. We finally start to put the pieces of Josephine’s past together, and I wouldn’t want to be in her shoes, any day. She has a rough time. Luckily, she’s one badass chick. A couple back issues – Nonplayer #1 and American Vampire #24 were in my bag. Great comics.

So there you have it. A fantastic week in the world of comics. Join us next week for the next Avengers VS X-Men . Hopefully we’ll have some progress with the story.

Ok possibly I Am also early with this, but I assumed the film was great.
I thought Joss Whedon did excellent job with it.
Now I’ve constantly regarded Superman (1978) and Batman (1989) as very best superhero movies, but The Avengers was also fantastic superhero movie.
So can we say that The Avengers is probably the biggest superhero motion picture ever?

    Hi guys,
Im a large Marvel enthusiast ( even though I like DC universe better). The hulk , being accurate to his nature, smashed the black widow. How did he, by the conclude of the Avengers movie start using orders from Captain America.

I have no Notion how to commence examining Marvels comics because all the characters show up in various concerns of other comics and it can be so confusing. How do I read a comic with no missing any information? And where to even begin.

    Thanks.

I saw the avengers yesterday and as with all of the marvals videos they place another scene right after the credits. But this one particular had me lost. If any person has observed it make sure you inform me about it. I will not know where that room monkey in a helmet came from.

Think about SERIOUS disasters like in 2012. Could Superman or the Avengers have stopped the disasters? And what could they have done?
Alright let’s say we put Avengers in the movie 2012, What the heck would they do?

And let’s say we put Superman (Returns version) in the movie 2012, what would he do to save the earth from tectonic displacement that would happen everywhere at once, and cause giant tsunamis? And from America from sinking into the oceans?

  7. I’m trying to catch up on Fantastic Four and the Avengers and was wondering what issues I should read because I don’t want to read them ALL. I was wondering if anyone out there had some recommendations on what to read in the 60s, 70s and 1980s era of either of these franchises.

Just finished cleaning out my now hospitalized hoarder alcoholic brothers house and I found about 5 rubbermaid tubs full of comics. Most are not sealed in plastic and I doubt any are real old. He’s now 45 and has probably been collecting since he was 16 until he began really drinking heavily about 5 years ago. Is there a guide to judging comics worth? I know nothing about comics, but I know some are valuable. Thanks

  11. I always wonder why hasn’t Thor ever tried to become leader of the AVENGERS. He’s like more powerful than both Captain America and Ironman, he’s also had experience in leading troops in Asgard.

Why doesn’t he take up the mantle of leadership in the AVENGERS, he is the most powerful of the original AVENGERS?

  13. The song is an american male singing about a vampire town. This was on the advert for the ‘vampire season’ vampire films. any ideas?

  14. there was an electronic song played during the shooting of the ford vampire commercial segment. not the actual commercial song, but the one played in the background. it was a girl singing, but i couldn’t hear the lyrics.

  15. It’s for a story I’m writing, based off of Twilight. I guess some character background would be helpful in naming him…

He’s approximately 140 years old. He feeds on humans. He exploits a girl named Isadore (who’s the main character) and uses her extremely strong fear of death to control her. He absuses her, finding it fascinating incrediably frail humans are, but never kills her. He uses her (in the story) to get inside a pack of werewolves that he wants to destroy. He’s really really violent, but he’s not scary in that sense. He’s also a living lie detector-that’s his “power”. You probably won’t get that unless you’ve read Twilight.

Name ideas? I want something not really exotic but not really common. And not James. (Sorry, I’ve been suggested that waaay too many times)
And believe me, the story is NOTHING like Twilight.
