Hi-Rez Studios Gives Us One Hell of a Game in Smite

Studios has released some new images and video for their new game . A game, has taken the genre in some new directions. It’s been gotten a lot of people talking, here and elsewhere, and we’ve already discussed not only how awesome we think this game will be, but how fun the demo alone was at the PAX show this year.

I’m not gonna try to convince you with one liners like: “It’s sexy!” or “This game WILL blow your mind!”. Rather, just take a look for yourselves. Pictures worth a thousand words, as they say:

There are a few things I really like about this game. First of all, unlike other MOBAs, instead of having a real IP, players are controlling mythological gods. Like Ra:

He was totally was thought to have traveled on two solar boats called the Mandjet (the Boat of Millions of Years), or morning boat and the Mesektet, or evening boat. And I definitely did not wikipedia that.

Another cool champion I’ve got my eyes on is Arachne. While I didn’t get the chance to see Ra in action, Arachne definitely looks like a melee carry (for those unfamiliar with the genre, that’s a champion who is dedicated to killing other champions after building up their items):

The other big thing that draws me to this game is exactly what you think it is, but perhaps not why. Obviously it distinguishes itself from other MOBAs by utilizing the 3rd person view, as opposed to an isometric view. What this means is that your camera never leaves your champion’s shoulder, and you’re not clicking on things to target them. This is actually huge for separating itself from other MOBAs. For instance, ever since DOTA, and in to League of Legends and Heroes of Newerth as well as DOTA2, we’ve seen a slew of champion clones. The same abilities maybe mixed and matched on to different champions across different games. It’s understandable, when you’ve got a good idea, people utilize it and try to build on it.

Smite however breaks this cycle. This necessarily cannot happen because you’re dealing with an explicitly different type of control scheme. One that does not allow old champion ideas to translate well. For MOBA fans, we’re looking at an opportunity to see a lot of good innovation. Stuff we haven’t seen before. Which means that Smite could be a breath of fresh air in a genre where titles are more alike than they are different.

SMITE is an online battleground between mythical gods. Players choose from a selection of gods, join sessionbased arena combat and use custom powers and team tactics against other players and minions. SMITE is inspired by Defense of the Ancients (DoTA) but instead of being above the action, the third-person camera brings you right into the combat. And, instead of clicking a map, you use WASD to move, dodge, and fight your way through the
detailed graphics of SMITE´s battlegrounds.
