I can’t remember using strategy guides when I first started to play video games. For me, the booklet that came with the game, also came with a phone number that you could call for help with said game. I never called those numbers (mainly because they cost money) and if I got stuck in a game (before guides and the net) I would figure it out myself. At times, that would mean I would have to leave my system on overnight, but I managed to figure it out on my own.
When I started to play more RPG and Final Fantasy games, I did end up getting the strategy guide book (most of which I still own). However I would end up pages behind from where I actually was in the game, ignoring the guide book and only looking at it when I needed it.
I collect the good ones I would need.. Like Skyrim and mortal Kombat. – @LadyBearXoXo
Then I started to work at GameStop and using a strategy guide was frowned upon, therefore I stopped. Plus by then I could just look something up online if I really needed help with game. I waited for certain guides to “penny out” instead of buying them at launch with the game. Half the time I didn’t even use them, I just wanted to collect them because of reasons.
Hell no. I don’t need you GUIDE to finish this game. What kind of self respecting gamer utilizes a guide? On the other side, old school instruction manuals like this one, hard back manual with a cloth map of the game world? Yeah, that’s the shit right there. – William
After GameStop I still didn’t buy strategy guides unless it was a collector’s edition or it simply looked cool, like the guide for Skyrim. If I need help now with a game or to track achievements, I look to Google Search, Twitter and various other online places or friends.
I like the guides that are more like art books. We have the Dark Souls book because it’s beautiful visually and intellectually. – Tavia
The guides that I do own are just collecting dust either in a box or on my book shelf. Nowadays, there’s no reason to buy a strategy guide unless you are a collector. Buying a guide in today’s day and a age is a waste of money since you can simply look up what you need online.
I like art books, but generally I can find the information I need on gamefaqs, or wikia, or forums, or youtube. Basically, there is enough free information out there that it renders paid strategy guides obsolete. – Greg

Interesting…
Unless there’s exclusive content like a DLC or some really complicated extras that stump the usual wiki guide authors and/or come really good collectible content that comes with it, like a signed hardcover guide, I’m hard pressed to buy any strategy guide nowadays.
The last one I purchased was for Saint’s Row the Third, which had a really cool and useful DLC. If that content were not available, I probably would not have bothered.
One possibility that may keep the strategy guide business alive is to have an e-book component available, especially if it’s searchable. With the Google, discussion forums and all of the wiki guides available on the web, strategy guides really need to raise the bar in terms of art, maps and screenshots. Put in 3D rotatable models and interactive maps and put it ahead of the speed players that publish on wikis and you would surpass everything the wiki community as to offer.
Prima is sort of moving in this direction, but the print guide is ultimately cheaper than the online version. The either need to give a free e-book code with the print guide or sell the e-book version for the standard $9.99 price to stay alive.
This article is so frustrating! Its so stupid to think that just because some people think they are cool enough to not use the physical copy of a guide gives them the justification to tell others its bad. Besides, wouldn’t using the internet be doing the same thing as using a guide?

Thank you to everyone who can help me out.
In Final Fantasy 9 I was able to run around instead of walk because there was an option within the configuration in the game menu. But for Final Fantasy 7, and Legend of the Dragoon, there is no such option.
I havent played any of the other final fantasy but wanting to play final fantasy xiii. Will i be completely lost with out knowing what happened in the other games ?
Hi everyone, I have been recently been considering creating my own online strategy guides for video games and selling them but was wondering what steps I need to take to go about doing this. I was also thinking of creating CD-Rom strategy guides but once again I’m not sure if I can unless I speak to the proper people because I do understand that everything is copyrighted and I don’t want to try selling any of the guides unless I know it’s ok. If anybody could help me out i would greatly appreciate it.
The guides would come fairly cheap however…i was considering a price range of around 3.99 to 5.99 depending on how new the game is. Plus mine would cover as much a there is to cover in the game with pictures and possibly videos.
Or do you play without a strategy guide?
I am extremely bored and got nothing better to do, so I want to ask you all what your favorite monster is in the Final Fantasy games. It can be any monster from any Final Fantasy game, including the ones outside the main series. It can be anything ranging from normal enemies to bosses to final bosses. Keep in mind though that it has to be something with monstrous qualities, so human fights or fights with other races don’t count(like the first Seymour fight in Final Fantasy X). I’ll include robots just for fun.
So what is it?
I have never played a Final Fantasy game, and I am wondering if I will be totally lost if I try Final Fantasy 13. Are all of the games separate stories or is it one ongoing story? I am also a bit confused about the combat system: is it turn based or real-time?
Ok I want to get into the Final Fantasy series/saga/chronicals. Caue there are like 1 million 57 games out for the same title. I want to learn the story and everythig but i dont want to play the very first final fantasy cause its in the old bit form. Will someone tell me what game i can start with and still get the story.
