PAX East – Spec Ops: The Line Isn’t Your Run Of The Mill Shooter

Never again will I make the mistake of judging a book by its cover.  Case in point, , the first  game in over a decade after the revival of the series from 2K  and original developer Yager Development.

While people, myself included, may have originally portrayed the war game as a traditional brown painted , that couldn’t of been more far from the truth.  After talking with lead writer Walt Whitman after my playthrough, that much is clear.

There’s a story to be told as you play and there’s been a lot of give and take between writers and developers.  The game may have premiered back at E3 2010, but the 18 months in the dark the game went through has resulted in polishing a marriage between story and . It results in the game being able to tell a story with more than just narration, cutscenes, and dialog. does suffer from some occasional issues; aiming doesn’t feel perfectly with an 360 controller and screams “play me on ,” but running in and out of cover is fluid.

Even more impressive is scope of the game itself.  Whitman himself stated the importance of great sound design, something that jumped out during my demo. During combat, there was no banter, just orders and commands; voices and effects resulted the environment; when I was inside, everything sounded like it was, well, inside. Just as impressive was the scope of an empty Dubai, a city with larger than life skyscrapers and a population of almost 4 million people. Instead, the Dubai of Spec Ops: The Line is completely deserted aside from renegade military personal and sandstorms. While the game does promise an engine that randomly generates sandstorms, none of that was on display for my session.

After my 3 binge, I felt right at home ordering commands to squad mates.  In fact, the process felt smoother and simplier, though I’d like to be able to stun more often, something that came as a surprise to me considering the subtlety of the in-game hug and the lack of emphasis on narrative. I would wish I’d be able to command my squad mates to stun enemies more often, suppression and sniping worked just as fine. Occasionally, run and gun tactics worked perfectly fine too, but that’s because the enemy AI would decide to refuse to come out of cover.

My enthusiasm for spec ops has been peaked, sufficed to say. The game will launch on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC June 26th. Hopefully they can iron out a couple of bugs with the game, but for the most part there’s a fair amount of polish to be found here. If the multiplayer can come together to complement the 8-10 hour campaign, Spec Ops: The Line could be an excellent summer sleeper hit.

Realising there were no spec ops missions in the stimulus, I was just pondering if IW had any ideas for a FOXTROT Spec OPs pack in the future , in my viewpoint it would be much better than COD4 maps any day.

I want a song list for the game. I rented it and liked some of the tracks it had, and I wanted to download some. Also, there is one I like that have arcade game- like tones at the beginning. Point that one out with the list. Thanks!

  11. I think 2k makes more arcade type sports games and they are so unrealistic.EA on the other hand makes realistic sports games and they been it for awhile and they are so close to mastering it.

  12. I never seem to see MJ in any video games which really makes me angry because I want to be able to play with him. Any idea why he’s not in any of them?

  13. 2k is just a plain bad game, my player mode is kinda fun but it gets old. Are there any other baseball games i can play on xbox or any coming out soon. I know ps3 has a good baseball franchise but i don’t have a ps3

  14. i have never played any nba 2k basketball video games, so the controls are different from nba live. i also hate the fact the i always lose because every jump shot i shoot pretty much misses and everything the computer shoots goes in. So how do i get good at nba 2k9 fast? because i am losing a lot of games in the association mode.

  15. hi guys ,I’ve downloaded [Spec Ops : The Line] a day ago repacked with a size of [3.75 GB] After Setup the game became [7.50 GB].

I’ve just Installed it (it toke so long about 30mins), as I installed the components within the setup file such as Direct X and Nvidia Physx..etc.

but when I started the game it has crashed the moment the intro screen has started (you know..that Intro screen which has for example ‘Ink is a trademark of blah .. blah .. blah and all this shit) ,I got my PC freezed , crashed and the MIGHTY Memory Dumb Screen has appeared so that I restart my computer !

I don’t know whether the problem is from the size of the game it self (repacked, blackboxed or full version), or it’s a matter of drivers !

I don’t think it’s a matter of pc, I can run Batman Arkham City Max Settings and a resolution of 1024×720 and below.

here’s my pc specifications to be honest :
    CPU : Pentium(R) Dual-Core E5300 @2.60GHz
    GPU : Nvidia Geforce 9500 GT 1GB.
    RAM : 3GB
WIN : XP Professional 2002 Service Pack 3

please help me in this problem before I get my PC exploded :D

    –thanks for your time–

  16. I was watching the NHL Superskills on the All Star Weekend, and before every event it showed a preview of happens in the event and that preview was obviously from a video game and in the bottom left corner of the screen it said ’2K Sports’. So I was wondering if you could play the superskills challenge on 2k Sports?

  17. What the title says. And when i play borderlands the 2k video plays but It doesn’t freeze even though its exactly the same. HELP!

  18. I have the option of working for Arclight Cinemas ushering, working concession, and potering or 2K Games video game testing. Which job should I take? I’m fairly passionate about both games and movies. I’m not really into dealing with customers all day, but on the other hand I don’t know if 50+ hours a week in front of a TV is gonna be that rad either. Please share any experiences with testing or working in a theater.
