It’s without a doubt that 2K Sports and Visual Concepts have created the greatest basketball simulation franchise of our generation, what with NBA 2K11 taking home more accolades than any sports game to date. NBA 2K12 saw some improvements in gameplay, and some added pizzaz, but to my dissapointment the My Player mode felt almost the same.
Reward the gamer
What is lacking: The sheer amount of hours it takes to create a beastly player in NBA 2K12‘s My Player mode is unreal, from actually playing the game to doing drills, practicing, etc. At the end of the day, what do we have to show for it? The amount of attribute points you get per drill is a joke, and creating a good player has turned into a grind fest. Skill points are too expensive and hard to earn, going back to my earlier point. It is possible to keep the game challenging, and still make it fun, right now, it’s more challenging than fun. Make it possible to earn more skillpoints, or make skills cost less, significantly less.
What we want: Enough with the shitty attribute points, seriously, the most points you can get from drills is 400 and a 1 point increase to a stat? Make championships matter, add more milestones, make awards matter, overall make the My Player mode less boring and more rewarding. Make it able for us to sign our player with different sponsors, add an ego feature that will allow us to mold the player into how we want them to react in certain situations. Better character customization such as haircuts and accessories would be nice, and the addition of the dunk contest and 3 point shootout will make the All Star weekend even more rewarding.
Reward the player
What is lacking: Remember playing Sony’s basketball sim, NBA: The Life? Though it had a short run, it had the most fulfilling “superstar mode” of any sports game to date. You had the backdrop of a family rooting for you, your agent you had to interact with, events you had to attend, it actually felt like you had a life outside of each individual game (not to mention the cutscenes were very enjoyable). I’ll still never forget the moment my player got drafted and he left the stage to call his mom, that is immersion.
If the NBA 2K series implemented a similar line of immersive events and situations, the replay value of My Player mode will skyrocket. I say this because I ended my My Player run after my second season, and I’ll explain why. My entire reason for wanting to keep playing was to make my player the best. A 5’9″ PG drafted 4th overall to the Houston Rockets, Jamal Knight carried his team to a winning season his rookie year, ending the year as a starter with many Player of the Week awards, Sophomore Rookie game MVP, Rookie of the Year, but without a championship ring. This is why I played a second season. With the second season down, a championship ring on Knight’s finger, an AllStar game MVP, Finals MVP, Season MVP, and many more awards under my belt, I still found the My Player mode to be incredibly unrewarding, and here’s why: each season is EXACTLY the same.
At the end of the season, if you win the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy, you make a trip to the White House (you don’t take a picture with Obama like last year though), and that’s it, literally. The season restarts and it’s back to square one. No parties, no cutscene, just a picture of the White House and some skimpy point bonus. There’s simply no reason to continue playing after you’ve won your first trophy, because you know you’ll do everything all over again, and it’s just a rehashed mess.
What we want: Revamp the non-gameplay part of My Player. Give us a life off the court: photoshoots, outings, meeting with the GM, custcenes, random events, etc. Bring back the agent, allow us to request for a better pay (the newly implemented payment system in the game felt like an after thought at best). The abilities need to be revamped, completely, it’s way too expensive to make a good player. Allow us to purchase a crib, make it the focal point of character customization. More player customization: the ability to create a custom pregame ritual, crossover move, a set of voices to choose from, and for the love of almighty God, give us new suits. Having the commentators actually talk about you is nice, give us more of that.
Fix the gameplay
The amount of times I’ve passed the ball to a teammate on the sideline, only to have him step out of bounds with no defender on him (he literally walks out of bounds) is preposterous. Teammate AI is sporadic and borderline idiotic: always taking the last second shot in a quarter even if it’s past half court, not playing smart, over dribbling, etc. There are so many glitches in the game – players bumping into each other, losing the ball, the game overall plays nothing similar to an actual professional basketball game at times.
What we want: Make coaches matter, give different skill points for different coaches, give each coach their own playing style. Better teammate AI, improved trade system. Fix the pick and roll system, add better plays and more variety in playcalling. The whole momentum thing is just horrible. Timeouts and Coaching AI needs to be fixed. AI needs to notice fast break situations and not call plays that result in players stopping to setup a play in a 3 on 2 fast break. Give us the ability to start as a decent player, why is a player of 61 overall even in the NBA to begin with? Allow my player to be a team captain, so we can call plays no matter what position we’re in. Bring back the D-League, training camp, and summer circuit.

These suggestions are not meant to bash the game developers in any way, they are just simply that, suggestions; things that we feel will make the NBA 2K franchise so much more enjoyable and fun to play. Some of these suggestions were from the mind of my great friend, @murderwattz, who’s probably the only person that plays NBA 2K12‘s My Player mode more than I do.
My interest has been perked
The early video games in the NBA typically have only a hand complete of excellent players on the subject and the late games obtained all the excellent players. Why is that? Doesn’t every video game count? What about the preseason? Do these video games count?

believe it or not everyone does not play myplayer. i personally thinks its a bore and prefer association. having said that….if they only focused on myplayer and online im not buying dat shiiiii because its no better then 2k12 for me. stop being selfish and think of the game as a whole and how they can improve and essentially complete the game.
My Player is a standout mode that sets NBA 2K aside from the other basketball sims, and it’s one of the most played modes in the game. I said nothing about them focusing only on My Player, but they should make it better.
1. Seeing the recently NBA playoffs offs and the incorrect calls or no calls towards one crew throughout a specific game.
2. MBL has had some problems but no umpire is permitted to talk to people as in the NBA
3 The NFL does not enable coversations with gamers the way the NBA does
4. I have only seen a few soccer game titles but officers take care of themselves well.
I never recognize why players like J.J. Reddick and Adam Morrison were not as profitable in the NBA as other rookie, like Deron Williams. Is it since they simply failed to alter to the recreation or is it due to the fact of the groups they are on?
I mean, I by now have a feeling Tyler Hansborough would not make the changeover from university to NBA even though gamers like O.J. Mayo, Michael Beasley and Derrick Rose will extremely probable succeed.

I agree my player needs to become more fun. And don’t force us to play unnecessary games against sorry ass opponents. Let us have a choice to pick a team to go to. Let us play with all 5 players it starts to get boring playing with one person all the time.

This mode should stand ALONE and you guys at 2k should give this mode the respect it deserves. The fans have already given you the blueprint, what’s the hold up? over 5 million sold huh? That’s cool. But how about doubling those numbers by giving the fans what the f&%k they want!
THE JOY IS IN THE JOURNEY:
Bring back the draft combine, summer league, training camp, D League, and take it a step further by bringing over pre-draft workouts from association and let us experience the actual process of making it to the league! 2k was on some BS with this rookie showcase nonsense in 2k12. Scrap that and give us the real platform players have to take in order to make it, not some NBA elite reincarnation of a fantasy all-star game for rookies.
CUT THE CRAP 2k:
2k needs to really, really, REALLY grasp the concept of a level playing field. DEFENSE is just as important as offense if not more, but for the life of me I can’t seem to figure out why all of my stupid a%& teammates play like Javale McGee when he wore that atrocious wizards uniform.
These are professional players not junior high scrubs, they should be playing at a high level and actually engaged in the action not just out there taking up space.
SHOW ME THE $$$:
You mean to tell me it’s only 5 shoe companies with athletes in the league? yeah ok. You guys have the best basketball game on the planet EVERY YEAR but yet an still your shoes look like Sh%t and you never have updated accessories. My player should be given the option to choose which company he wants to affiliate himself with and they should pay my player via contract negotiation. Don’t just assume I want to represent Jordan Brand just because YOUR company is under contract with them. What ever happened to variety? Where are all of these endorsements 2k promised? The magazines and sh%t were cute but c’mon son! we need something groundbreaking. You have Gatorade on everything but I still have yet to be approached by them, what gives? More endorsements and more compensation are needed.
DEVELOPING A BEAST:
Okay 2k, Let’s revamp the ” Shootaround ” option and turn that into ” Workout “. Have the ability to sign your own trainer or use your team’s trainer and have him assign your player objectives to complete such as (20 Jumpers from a certain spot on the court, make a certain amount of Ft’s, suicides, etc.) you should earn extra SP’s for completion. ” Scrimmage ” should be known as ” Team Practice “. Team Chemistry should be greatly affected, if you play the game right your team should embrace you more after every practice. If you’re a selfish player and it shows throughout practice the team should shut you out more in games. This is also another way to utilize the My Buzz system. Let My Player’s personality be dictated by his play on the court, no preset BS! Also the D league should be more of an active option for teams. If I’m not ready to contribute or If I’m not helping the team with the minutes I’m given my team should send me to the D League and make me earn my spot back. nothing should be handed to me, especially if my rating is lower than the starter of my position.
CAN A PLAYER GET SOME LOVE?:
The commentators act as if my player doesn’t exist and it absolutely ruins the experience. I lead the league in PPG but they only mention Kevin Durant who’s in 3rd, huh? This mode needs some type of storyline or they should implement dynamic broadcasting so that My Player feels more apart of the NBA rather than a mere walk-on from out of nowhere.
HOW DO I LOOK?:
Dear 2k, Your Create – A – Player mode sucks big time. Face, Hair, Tat’s, Accessories, this mode sadly needs a major overhaul and this could be a big step in the right direction for the My Player mode as a whole.
LOGIC:
Stop the foolish trading and give us the chance to develop within a stable system, every year I have a different team and that usually plays a part on the court.
IS THAT REALLY WHO I THINK IT IS?:
Stars don’t play like stars and the guys on my team can’t hit shots whatsoever. I understand you can’t make everything but Melo missing an uncontested jumper is highly unlikely. I would like to see players react to plays on both ends realistically and make shots their suppose to make, what’s the use of having a maxed out mid-range and consistency rating when My Player can’t hit that shot consistently?
ALL FUN AND GAMES:
Make the whole My Player experience fun again! No CPU advantages, No restrictions, No default actions. Let ME do the decision making when it comes to MY PLAYER. The draft should be two rounds not one! I played one day and had a terrible game on purpose, bad interviews and all, got drafted with the 17th pick rating 60 that’s not realistic. If i play like sh%t I shouldn’t be rewarded for it lol. I should be 2nd round to undrafted, that’s when the combine, camps, and pre-draft workouts come into play.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST:
I’m sure 2k is paying little to no attention to the fans because they keep selling us the same game from the previous year with make-up and some type of gimmick. I just want this mode to shine and actually mimic the road real players take in order to realize their NBA dreams, we all know there is no easy way to the league.

Great article. They gotta make the contract negotiations better as well. After 3 seasons ( ROY, 3x all star, 2x season/finals MVP, overall rating 99, pos.&ovr rank 1st) I get offered bogus contracts! 4yr 52M??? Seriously? But a forward ovr 71 gets 4 yr 102M? And the attribute caps r crazy too. Gotta pay mad money for 1 point cap increase, then pay to increase it? And it would be nice to get taken out the game with the rest of the starters when we r blowing a team out. Or at least have the option to ask to stay in the game when in foul trouble or ask to come out if your up enough

2)Building your own rivalries. We all have players we love in NBA. And we have players we don’t love as much. I would love the opportunity to trash talk (not cursing or anything ridiculous), but to call out players.
“Kobe Bryant? Nah, we’re not worried about him. We’ll shut him down tonight.”
3)More interaction with the coach. I’m sure the NBA leaders have a big impact on the coaches decisions. I want my player to be the same way.
“Coach, put me in. Coach, let me guard him. Coach, I need a breather.”
Do you know how often I was frustrated b/c I was a PG, but watched the other teams SG destroy us. And of course, you lose points for “leaving your assignment.”
4) More interview questions. At least during big games, rivalries and such. And break down the answers a little bit better. I definitely see an improvement from last years, “answer professionally. answer arrogantly.” But still, the answers I chose aren’t exactly what I thought they’d be.
5) Starting out better than a junior high school bench warmer.
I mean, I get it. You want us to climb the ladder in the NBA. But when my player can’t hit open 5 foot jumpers, why is he there in the first place?
6) I know I spoke with a 2K rep and they said they don’t allow flagrant fouls b/c it encourages violence. Ok, gotcha. But what about techs for arguing with a ref? Players throwing their hands in the air, taunting or staring down a player after a play.Hanging on the rim. That should make the other team play harder, thus making the game more realistic and difficult. It doesn’t have to be violent, childish or ignorant. But it can make it more intense.
7) Give the player his own pre game ritual. Something small, but maybe that can be added to endorsement commercials and such. KG bangs his head, James throws anthrax in the air and Wade does pull ups on the rim. It’ll be cool if my player could do something. Heck, have’em do the Dougie at half court, lol.
8) When I become the best player on the team, I wanna feel like it. I don’t want the announcers saying Rose had 8pts and 6 assists, when I had 27 points, 9 rebounds and 11 steals. I’m the star, treat me as such.
9) After your first dominant season, I think you should have an impact on who the team drops/picks up. If someone is playing poorly, you should be able to voice that. And if you feel someone is an asset to the team, voice that too. Maybe even moving ppl to different positions. I’d love to have Rondo as my 1, and Rose as my 2.
10) When teams are pursuing you, maybe they can sit down and offer you contracts. Or let you know who they’d be trading to get you. I would hate to go to the Bulls to find out that Rose left in the trade to get me. But if I were the SG and they traded Rip, I may be interested.

I wanted to know what the actual website was for 2K Sports or NBA 2K was. I’m hoping to posts/email my idea to an actual rep. I spoke with one before on 2K11. He gave professional answers and told me why flagrant fouls weren’t in the games. I’d like to posts/email my thoughts on 2k13.

Players throwing their hands in the air, taunting or staring down a player after a play.Hanging on the rim. That should make the other team play harder, thus making the game more realistic and difficult. It doesn’t have to be violent, childish or ignorant. But it can make it more intense.
7) Give the player his own pre game ritual. Something small, but maybe that can be added to endorsement commercials and such. KG bangs his head, James throws anthrax in the air and Wade does pull ups on the rim. It’ll be cool if my player could do something. Heck, have’em do the Dougie at half court, lol.
8) When I become the best player on the team, I wanna feel like it. I don’t want the announcers saying Rose had 8pts and 6 assists, when I had 27 points, 9 rebounds and 11 steals. I’m the star, treat me as such.
9) After your first dominant season, I think you should have an impact on who the team drops/picks up. If someone is playing poorly, you should be able to voice that. And if you feel someone is an asset to the team, voice that too. Maybe even moving ppl to different positions. I’d love to have Rondo as my 1, and Rose as my 2.
10) When teams are pursuing you, maybe they can sit down and offer you contracts. Or let you know who they’d be trading to get you. I would hate to go to the Bulls to find out that Rose left in the trade to get me. But if I were the SG and they traded Rip, I may be interested.

The early games in the NBA usually have only a hand full of good players on the field and the late games got all the good players. Why is that? Doesn’t every game count? What about the preseason? Do those games count?

I wanted to know what the actual website was for 2K Sports or NBA 2K was. I’m hoping to posts/email my idea to an actual rep. I spoke with one before on 2K11. He gave professional answers and told me why flagrant fouls weren’t in the games. I’d like to posts/email my thoughts on 2k13.

I heard that the average nba player make over 5 million? But do they train vigorously every day. I hate to become a b bal player if they are training like 10 hrs a day?

Great, i agree with everything. And i would like to add one thing. They need to let us choose the color of our accessories FOR EACH GAME. I think everybody want to see the celtics playing all in white at home and black away. Every time actually do that.

I got a 10 minute speech to give tommorow on the nba lockout which isnt fair because I dont know the first thing about it. Even since I’ve been an NBA fan the Stanley Cup finals are usually an entire series ahead of the NBA playoffs. So while the NBA is wrapping up their conference finals the NHL is getting started on their finals. This has been the case every year that I can remember (29 year old die hard NBA fan) except this year. Does anyone know why this is? Has this ever happened before?

I think it is a little unethical that NBA players(not sure about other professional sports) are often times not notified until they are traded. I often hear stories about how a player had to find out from someone else other than his coach of team general manager. I was wondering if there are any rules or regulations in the NBA regarding this matter.

Every time I play my player I want to break my Xbox. I’m not very good at NBA games but I find them fun because I love basketball. I want the ability to turn it to rookie. My guy is a 64 overall and on pro D. Rose and many others overpower me all game so I end up with 400 point a game eventhough I average 25 points a game, since my guy can shoot. It takes so long to bring my rating up it’s pointless to play.
For as long as I can remember the NHL playoffs have always been an entire series ahead of the NBA playoffs. When the NHL was in the finals the NBA was in the conference finals. This year the NBA ended before the NHL. Has this ever happened before? Does anyone know why it happened this year?

I thought that once a company makes a contract, no other company can make video games besides the company that has the contract. e.g. EA Sports has a contract with NFL and 2K Sports have one with NBA. Neither company can make the competitors games, yet both companies make NHL. Why?

I don’t understand why players like J.J. Reddick and Adam Morrison weren’t as successful in the NBA as other rookie, like Deron Williams. Is it because they simply failed to adjust to the game or is it because of the teams they’re on?

The new version of NBA is almost out from 2k and I have heard nothing about the player being able to commit technical and flagrant fouls. Why the hell is this? I think it would make the game a lot more fun and definitely more authentic.
