With the American and European release date of the approaching, executives are biting their fingernails at the low sales numbers the handheld is pulling in . Sony, a company that is based out of Japan, was hoping sales for the new handheld would be much higher in their home country.

Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony , has a different point of view on this situation though, saying that you can’t relate the sales trends of Japan to America and Europe.

““One of the things we have learnt over a long period of time, is that whether it is PS1, PS2, PSP or , it is dangerous to the point of impossible to take any experience from the Japanese market and try and extrapolate it, and propose upon what will happen in Europe or North America.”

He goes on to explain how he believes the markets are different and that they seem to be diverging to a greater extent.

“It is impossible to draw any meaningful conclusions of the Japanese launch in the context of what will happen in Europe. We are more focused on our stakeholder reaction, whether that is specialist press or the reaction from retail. The key task of allocating the supply that we have to the considerable demand, and just ensuring everything is in place for February 22nd.”

The PlayStation Vita sold 325,000 units its first weekend, but the sales numbers began quickly dropping, even falling behind the sales of the PSP and the 3DS on its second and third weeks respectively.

The Vita goes on sale in the U.S. and Europe on February 22nd.

About the Author

Ryan Smith
At the age of 3, Ryan received an NES from a relative and the rest is history. Sneaking up past his bed time to play Ninja Gaiden or Super Mario Bros was a common practice for him, and often caught too. Wasting his youth away on the SNES or Genesis, slamming controllers, and wishing death upon his video game foes. Many a nights Ryan stayed awake to defeat that final boss. There was nothing more rewarding. As the PlayStation and N64 came around, his love for video games increased until it inevitably became one of his passions. Now days, much of his free time is consumed by playing on Xbox Live with friends. Here on The Game Fanatics as the Reviews Editor, Ryan gets to share his passion of videos games with all of you! There's nothing more rewarding than that. /win
