With the American and European release date of the PlayStation Vita approaching, Sony executives are biting their fingernails at the low sales numbers the handheld is pulling in Japan. Sony, a company that is based out of Japan, was hoping sales for the new handheld would be much higher in their home country.
Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Europe, has a different point of view on this situation though, saying that you can’t relate the sales trends of Japan to America and Europe.
““One of the things we have learnt over a long period of time, is that whether it is PS1, PS2, PSP or PS3, it is dangerous to the point of impossible to take any experience from the Japanese market and try and extrapolate it, and propose upon what will happen in Europe or North America.”
He goes on to explain how he believes the markets are different and that they seem to be diverging to a greater extent.
“It is impossible to draw any meaningful conclusions of the Japanese launch in the context of what will happen in Europe. We are more focused on our stakeholder reaction, whether that is specialist press or the reaction from retail. The key task of allocating the supply that we have to the considerable demand, and just ensuring everything is in place for February 22nd.”
The PlayStation Vita sold 325,000 units its first weekend, but the sales numbers began quickly dropping, even falling behind the sales of the PSP and the 3DS on its second and third weeks respectively.
The Vita goes on sale in the U.S. and Europe on February 22nd.
