TGF Press Start: Week Ending December 4

This is a weekly segment where we share what games we are currently playing for our readers to get to know us a bit better. Said games can range from retro to current and from casual to FPS games. If we’re playing it, we’ll share it. Please feel free to comment with what your playing or your opinions on the games that we’re involved with.

Jen: Saints Row the Third has been really holding my attention. I am happily surprised at how much fun this game is. I enjoyed the first installment but I didn’t enjoy Saints Row 2. I’m happy that SR3 is so much better than I thought it would be. Had another taste of the SWTOR beta and played a little bit of Bejeweled 3. I picked up the DLC, “We Built This City”, for Rock Band 3, and played some guitar for a few.

Chris C.: King of Fighters XIII. Also after watching some real pros combo the heck out of each other on a Team Spooky broadcast from the NEC XII, as well as watching combo videos released from Atlus…I still have a long way to go to get to any form of decency in that title.

Catherine: I’m still stuck on Skyrim after almost a month. I haven’t had (as much) time with it as others would have, and I’ve already put in something akin to thirty or forty hours into the game, which is really saying something as to how MASSIVE this game is. I’ve also been playing The Lord of the Rings: War in the North, which really is quite atrocious. I’m glad I was gifted a copy instead of paying money for it like I originally intended to. The pacing of the combat is off, the leveling system and skills tree feels far too simple, and the story is broken. It’s a huge disappointment considering Snowblind Studio’s resume. It’s a painful reminder of Hunted: The Demon’s Forge, another anticipated co-op action game with RPG elements that ended up being a total disaster.

David: I managed to tear myself away from Skyrim long enough to finish Battlefield 3 on hard as well as making my way through it’s co-op missions. Besides that I was finally able to get my hands on Trehcned, I’ve been waiting for this game for a while now and it’s just as good as I’d hoped it would be.

Jeff: I’m going to go against the grain here, as I’ve spent all of my time last week in 1998. A marathon of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Crash Bandicoot 2, and Crash Bandicoot 3 kept me up for several nights. It was a blast playing through these classics with a modern, albeit a bit critical, lens.

DaJuan: I spent most of the weekend beating Saints Row the Third. The game is really fun and really crazy but what else would you expect from a Saints Row game. I have also been playing some Orcs Must Die!. Its a fun and addictive tower defense game. I cant forget about Minecraft, which has always been a favorite of mine.

Fus Roh Dah-ing all over the place!

Brittany: I’ve been playing Skyrim. I’m stuck on a quest called Promises to Keep… I think. I have to steal Maven Black-Briars horse “Frost” for Louis Letrush, but I told her and she told me to follow through with it but now I can’t find Louis Letrush because the quest glitched. Stole the horse and cant find Louis. So I’m frustrated.

Tavia: I’ve been playing Skyrim still and I find all the stupid dragons are really ruining my story and socializing. And because I’m playing mostly melee, I get burned a lot. So, I dropped my difficulty level…

Tom: I’ve been playing BF3 and Skyrim. Battlefield gives me a break from absorbing dragon souls and Fus Roh Dah-ing all over the place. I absolutely love Battlefield 3, especially when I’m in a great team, and have a great squad too. And after a particularly stressful day, Minecraft never fails to chill me out. So I’ve been on that a lot recently as well!

William: Been playing Skyrim, though I think I’m about done with it (only the dark brotherhood left to do). I’m not certain what I’m going to play next. Anyone have any suggestions for stuff that needs playing (anything that’s coming out / has come out, that not too many people are talking about at the moment?)

Nicholas: Been playing mobile games and my SNES emulator. On my phone, I have been playing Monster Dash, Jetpack Joyride, and Canabalt. Pretty much the same kinda game, but I’m a sucker for those. On my emulator, it’s been Contra 3 and Mega Man X. No matter how many times I play Mega Man X, it is still a blast to play it. I love the upgrades.

Jake: I haven’t been playing patch 4.3 in WoW, shocker, I know. I’ve been too busy enjoying hon and the dota 2 beta.

Ben: While I did play Skyrim earlier in the week, I took a break from it until they patch the new patch. Instead I did all the side quest stuff in Skyward Sword and then beat it. It’s a great game but the more I think about it, the more I realize that it’s not a great Zelda game. There are so many staples of the series that are just missing. No overworld, no fairy fountains, areas are not interconnected, no real secret areas. On that last point, in Ocarina of Time, you could spend the whole game and never fully explore the lost woods for example. There is no such area in Skyward Sword because the game forces you to retread the same three zones so many times and all those places are pretty linear. If you see a bomb-able wall, you mostly likely have to blow it up at some point to continue the story as opposed to finding a secret. Ok, I’ve rambled on enough.
