The Game Fanatics Holiday Gift Guide 2011: Mobile Devices

Holiday season 2011 is upon us, and if we happen to live through the apocalypse we’d want to cash in on the opportunity to get good deals on good gifts right? (Technically if you do happen to not survive the apocalypse, the ancient Egyptians taught us that one’s wealth should be carried with them to the after life, so I guess holiday season shopping applies either way). If you are having trouble shopping for that special geek of yours let us here at The Game Fanatics lighten that burden for you.

There are many types of geeks, from gamers to movie buffs, music geeks to tech geeks, and so much more. This edition of our holiday guide will focus on mobile geeks. These type of geeks get a special feeling out of Apple announcing a new iPhone or Motorola announcing a new tablet. You will see devices like tablets, smartphones, and e-readers pop up in this list. I encourage you to stay tuned to future versions of our gift guide that way you know what to buy for that special geek of yours.

If the mobile geek you’re shopping for likes to keep their head in the books then this a device he or she will love to have. The kindle line produced by Amazon is one of  the most popular e-readers out there and this specific version is the least expensive Kindle and is Amazon’s #1 best seller. It features Built in Wi-Fi and comes with a massive selection of popular titles. If that’s not enough for them Amazon has also announced that you will now be able to borrow Kindle books from your public library.
This device really needs no introduction, but I guess I should talk about it any way. Apple is no stranger to holiday gift guides, as they always make great and revolutionary products, and the iPhone 4S is no exception. The iPhone is one of the most popular smartphone lines around, and any geek that gets the 4S should consider themselves lucky. The iPhone 4s comes loaded with Apple’s new mobile operating system iOS 5, an 8 mp camera that can also record video at 1080P, and your own personal assistant Siri.
HTC is always on the cutting edge of mobile devices they some how know what works, and what doesn’t work, and that’s the kind mindset that you need in an ever crowding android market to stand out among the mediocre. The EVO 4g definitely stands out as one of the top android phones of the year. It rocks a 1 GHz Qualcomm QSD8650 CPU along with 512 MB of RAM under the hood. It also features an 8 MP autofocus camera that can record video in 720p at 30 frames per second.
This certainly is not the last time that you’ll see an Apple product on this list, but if the mobile geek you’re shopping for likes music than the iPod Touch will be right up their ally. Apple’s iPod line has always been on the forefront of mp3 players, but what makes the iPod Touch special is that it can do a lot more than listen to music. It also comes loaded with iOS 5, and that allows it to play games, watch movies, download apps, take pictures, and even record video.
To go along with the purchase of your iPhone or iPod Touch make sure you also pick up a pair headset’s for your geek. These are definitely Light Weight, compact, and a stylish replacement for the earphones that come with all  i devices!
If money is no object to you, and you really want to wow that geek of yours consider an upgrade from the EVO 4G to the HTC Sensation. This is a phone that has been competing in the mid to high end android market for almost half of the year and it definitely stands out. It is currently packing a 1.2 GHz dual core Qualcomm QSD 8650 processor under the hood along with a 4.3 in capacitive S-LCD Gorilla glass touch screen. It is currently running Android 2.3 Gingerbread, but you will be able to upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich once it releases.
The iPhone 3GS is still a popular phone despite it being over 2 years old that could be due to its low cost, and apple still supporting it with updates. If you are on a budget I would suggest picking this phone up because you could get it for free if you pick it up through AT&T on a two year contract. This is a low end phone so don’t expect some amazing specs.
If the geek you want to shop for is more of an android person, and you are still on a budget don’t fear as I have a phone that he or she will love while saving you a lot of green. My suggestion would be to pick up the Motorola Droid, the first android phone available to Verizon. It may be two years old, but it still packs a punch among the low end android market. With an unsubsidized price of $159.98 what’s not to love about this beautiful phone?
The iPod Nano is the Smallest of the iPod line up, but don’t mistake it for a child’s toy as it  features a beautiful touch display that makes getting to your music a quick tap away. The iPod Nano is also great for the geek that always like to work out as it features built-in accelerometer support, which works with Nike+iPod without the need to attach a Nike receiver or shoe sensor.
The iPad 2 may be last on this list, but it is definitely one of the most revolutionary products announced this year. Even though this edition of the holiday guide is for mobile geeks I will say that anybody able to unwrap this baby on christmahanakwanzika should consider themselves lucky. The iPad 2 features a 1 GHz dual-core Apple A5 processor under the hood while also running iOS 5. Movies, games & books all come alive on the stunning 9.7-inch widescreen LED Multi-Touch display.
I hope you enjoyed our first holiday guide there will be more to come so stay tuned to The Game Fanatics.
