Team Ninja Head: "Fighting Game Genre Stagnant"

Earlier this week at Tokyo Game Show, Team Ninja unveiled a preview of the next entry in the Dead or Alive series, Dead or Alive 5.

Today, according to Piki Geek, Team Ninja head, Yosuke Hayashi, claims that the purpose of Dead or Alive 5 should be to advance the fighting genre into the 21st century.

Now, before you make any cracks about advance boob physics, he does have a point. When I go back and think about all the fighters I’ve played this genre (Mortal Kombat, BlazBlueMarvel vs. Capcom 3, Super Smash Bros: Brawl, Street Fighter IV), there’s nothing particularly innovative about them; they’re just newer versions in the series with updated graphics and rosters, each with their own unique flair.

Hayashi went on to say that for Dead or Alive 5, we “want to make sure it provides something else, something different and moves the genre forward. It’s not going backwards, it’s trying to push the envelope for fighting games.” During the game’s announcement, he added that he wants the game to be fighting entertainment. Judging by the game’s trailer, it’s safe to say it’s getting on its way there, but the Dead or Alive series was always about some degree of entertainment, highlighted by the ample use of Dead or Alive 4’s high definition boobs interactive environments, on top of a gameplay formula that relies on counters more so than other fighters.

Here’s to hoping that Team Ninja can back up their talk instead of relying on past Dead or Alive concepts and claiming they’re “innovative.”
