Square Enix Changes the Street Date of Dungeon Siege 3 to June 21, 2011

Square Enix announced to day via press release that Dungeon Siege 3 will be scheduled to launch in North America on June 21, 2011. Square Enix has also stated that Dungeon Siege 3 will cost $59.99 on the PS3 and Xbox 360 and will cost $49.99 on Windows. Dungeon Siege 3 has been rated T for Teen by the ESRB. For those of you who don’t know about the latest Dragon Siege 3 the press release states, “In DUNGEON SIEGE III, players assume the role of one of four heroes, fighting for the sake of their fallen comrades to restore the land of Ehb. Conflict is constant in this action-RPG and decisions have lasting consequences, allowing players to alter the storyline. Choose to battle along with a companion or fight for honor with up to four friends via online co-op play. DUNGEON SIEGE III allows for two players to experience the story from start to finish in local co-op mode. Thanks to the robust AI, DUNGEON SIEGE III’s co-op multiplayer mode allows players to seamlessly drop in and out of battle without interrupting the action or impacting the campaign.”

The idea of a cooperative role playing game is extremely fascinating, but I personally wonder how it will impact the game and if the drop in drop out would make it easier for trolls and griefing. I am very happy to see the addition of local multiplayer since it seems the feature is becoming extinct in the wake of online supremacy, but concerned how it will be implemented. Will offline splitscreen players still be able to play with their online buddies? If so how will this be implemented across the platforms? Will this be one of the few PS3 games that allow for multiple PSN sign ins? If not how will it save the second players data? I hope my questions are answered soon.

Dungeon Siege 3 has seen many delays, however Square Enix’s president and CEO Mike Fischer has said, “Although the final polish phase has demanded a bit more time than originally planned, we want to assure fans and followers that the additional effort will allow us to deliver an action-RPG worthy of its rich heritage.” Which is a very good thing especially since developer Obsidian has received a lot of criticism for the amount of glitches and bugs in their latest two games Fallout: New Vegas and Alpha Protocol. As a huge fan of Obsidian I hope they have had enough optimal time on this project to polish Dungeon Siege 3 and lose the stigma they’ve built up on the last couple of releases.
